British boys love to rock, and The Maccabees are no exception. Last night I caught their sold-out show at Mercury Lounge and enjoyed the guitar riffs of another new wave of Englishmen. I’ve always been a huge fan of The Cribs and The Rakes -- also from England. The Maccabees’ tunes, I’d say, definitely fall within a similar vein. I invited one of my editors from BlackBook, and friend, Miss Eiseley Tauginas, to come with. Eiseley met me out front of Mercury around 8:30ish; we grabbed drinks inside and watched the boys' performance.
Afterward, outside on Houston Street, Eiseley and I caught up with guitarist Felix White, fresh from the stage, sweaty and all. I asked him what it’s been like being in the States. “Well, being in New York has been brilliant ... we’ve been roaming around the city seeing the sights. We even grabbed one of those hot dog wieners off the street!” As for his Mercury show, “It was just so great to play New York. It’s definitely a city to play. We also played out in Brooklyn too a few days ago (Brooklyn Hall of Music).”
As for what’s next on the agenda for The Maccabees, Felix shared, “Well, we’re heading off to Glastonbury! We’re really excited to perform back home for that festival.” Who wouldn’t be?
