Manhattan's East Side gynecologist, Dr. Scheinfeld, is the first American doctor to sell sex toys in his office. According to Details, Dr. Scheinfeld began selling Lelo, the Swedish line of "attractive and non-threatening" sex toys, after he and his wife experimented with a vibrator. Dr. Scheinfeld purchased the toy, but recalls the shame he felt when doing so. He wanted to both erase that shame and improve the sex lives of his patients. "Sex is a very important part of life," he says. "These products help us find out what we're capable of."
On the surface, his intentions are good. Dr. Scheinfeld is on a crusade to balance the teeter-tottering scoreboard of heterosexual couples and their orgasm counts, but isn’t the whole thing a bit off? It doesn't help that Dr. Scheinfeld has his 47-year-old assistant, Brenda Catapano, model the products for his patients. Catapano, who is described in the article as "bosomy and effervescent," playfully demonstrates how the butt plugs and cock rings work while advocating for a happy, adventurous sex life for everyone who comes into the office. The problem is that, for most people, up-selling isn't something you want to deal with at the gynecologist. I get irritated enough with the awkward cervix poking. Then again, he is a doctor, and what’s healthier than a great sex life?
Broccoli.
