David Wain may have first come to critical attention with his work in the improvisational comedy group The State and their irreverent, eponymous MTV show, but it was his turn behind the camera as writer and director of the cult classic Wet Hot American Summer that captured the hearts of film buffs. Fans of his work on both sides of the screen are now looking forward to his next effort: the highly anticipated comedy, The Ten. The Ten portrays 10 different stories, each based on one of the 10 Commandments. Though Wain jokes that we basically stole the idea from [Decalogue director] Krzysztof Kielowski, his actual inspiration tends to start closer to home. My inspiration largely comes from my friends, he says. I tend to create my experiences by looking at life with them. Fans of his friends in The State will have the opportunity to see every one of the original members in The Ten, as well as an all-star ensemble cast including Paul Rudd, Jessica Alba, Adam Brody, Winona Ryder, Rob Corddry, and Gretchen Mol. Being a performer helps me relate to the actors. I cant imagine trying to be a director without having done that, adds Wain, who finds his comedic talents tend to overlap and complement one another in different aspects of filmmaking.

Whether writing or producing or in the edit room, Im totally thinking the same wayhow can this be funnier? Though Wain couldnt say what hed be up to next, he did promise it would be both funny and thought-provoking. The Ten premieres in theaters nationwide August 3rd.
