High-tech toilets are always amusing when traveling (low-tech toilets are other things), and now, there's a thrilling new toilet on the horizon in Europe. The NoMix toilet collects pee in the front and poo in the back in the name of eco-friendliness, and it's gained wide consumer support in seven European countries.
What's to be gained from this suspicious separate-but-equal treatment? Separating urine in advance, before it reaches the wastewater treatment plant, could reduce the amount of nitrogen and phosphorous that trigger algae blooms, which can enter waterways and harm fishies. Scientists say the segregated urine also has the potential be used as an agricultural fertilizer. While the public has been widely surveyed about their feelings on the NoMix toilet, they haven't really been asked about how they feel about the human pee fertilizer just yet.
