Tomorrow is the launch party for the Los Angeles installment of the popular party/roving club, Mr. Black, at Bardot. I called West Coast liaison Luke Nero to get the scoop on what to expect at tomorrow's unveiling. For one thing, you'll get not one, but two Asses, though Luke said of the infamous bottomless waiters, "I might cull it down to one."
While you won't see other sights familiar to the New York club like Ladyfag, Los Angelenos will be happy to see their three hosts with the most: Lenora Claire, Gregory, Alexander, and Mr. Rusty Updegraff. Proving that birds of a feather truly flock together, Nero, who has only been here for five months, said he met Lenora online because they had modeled for the same jewelry line (or to be more exact, his Ass had done the modeling), and he literally picked one of the other hosts from the street -- "I met Gregory on a streetcorner outside of a party in Silverlake," said Luke. Funny how that works.
Mr. Black LA came about because Nero had gone to a gay bar in WeHo (which shall remain nameless) and was mortified that they were sticking to the tried-and-true gay bar formula. "I saw the most horrific drag show I had ever seen in my life," he said. He immediately called Stuart, a.k.a. Mr. Black, and said, "I can't believe in the 30 years since Stonewall or whatever it's been, this is as far as we've evolved. We're still selling this image of the gay social to the youth. I was horrified." So at Mr. Black, promises Luke, there will be no half-naked go-go boys or porn playing on the plasma screens. "We're just going back to basics -- it's a warm cool party where people can connect to each other and socialize."
Lest this sound a bit like he's planning a tea party, I can assure you Mr. Black is a whopping, fun, debauched good time. We're looking forward to Wednesday's hangover! Doors open at 9pm.
