Traditionally in the hospitality industry, a hotel being located next to a major construction site is seen as a negative, but oh no, that's not how they're pitching it at the the World Center Hotel. The new New York hotel is touting its location on the edge of the site of the September 11 attacks, and the construction site of the 1 World Trade Center building, aka the Freedom Tower, as a reason to stay there.
"At the forefront of the World Trade Center's revitalization and resurgence, this downtown New York City hotels opens with unfettered views of the rising Freedom Tower and National 9/11 Memorial & Museum," reads the hotel's website. "This unforgettable location lends an unmistakable energy to your Big Apple visit." Wow. Is "unmistakable energy" marketing speak for solemn and depressing? Cheryl Palmer, the vice president the company opening the hotel insists "People choose to be here because they want to be close to it. They want to feel it, they want to celebrate. They want to remember." Sounds like more marketing speak to us ("celebrate"?), but some customers are enjoying the view of the 24-hour construction site.
Greg McKinless, a recent guest of the hotel from Baltimore, said "You could say it's depressing, but you could also say it's been nine years, the Freedom Tower is going up and there's going to be a memorial. We're looking toward the future." Yeah even in the future, we'd have to go with visiting the memorial and staying elsewhere, even if it's just the nearby Millenium Hilton, if only because they have less offensive marketing.
