This past weekend, New Yorkers were treated to the kickoff of the Jelly Pool Parties concert series. For the past three years, hordes of people, myself included, have made the L train pilgrimage from Manhattan to McCarren Pool in Williamsburg to hear some of the hottest bands live. In the past I’ve seen Sonic Youth, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Band of Horses, and many more. The event, put together by the Jelly promoter crew, not only marked its first weekend this summer, yet more importantly a new HQ. Technically, the word “pool” could be removed from its title due to the new location at East River State Park. Its original namesake location, McCarren Park Pool, is on a hiatus due to a $50 million renovation.
According to the New York Times, the crowd seemed to thoroughly enjoy the new location; premiere acts included Mission of Burma, Ponytail, Jemina Pearl, and Pink Eyes. However, some attendees found the East River State Park venue less appealing and lacking the uniqueness vibe of McCarren Pool. Even so, seven more weekends of concerts are confirmed, with acts including Girl Talk, Grizzly Bear, Deerhunter, The Fiery Furnaces, Dirty Projectors, and more to lure you across the river.
