Oh, god. It's actually happening. It was bad, and now, it's worse. To make a long story short, New York's MTA has no money, and they're going to (a) make everything more expensive and (b) make cuts across the board.
An MTA finance committee approved fare hikes and service cuts yesterday, and the MTA's board votes on it tomorrow. New York state guv'nuh David Patterson basically threw his hands up and gave New Yorkers a "sorry, I take a limo, I could care less, and also, we're still gonna tax the shit out of you." The board doesn't know what to do or where to get money from, and they're just trying to figure out a way to keep the entire thing from going bankrupt.
My experience as a financial reporter is limited, but I feel like the straphangers of New York are allowed some righteous indignation over the fact that everyone seems to be getting bailout money but them. This is a really simple, stupid view of the situation, but it's the one that makes the most sense to everyone I know. We can't get angry, we can't get even, we kind of just have to take this one where it's going to hurt the most (in the wallet, somewhere near your back pocket).
Anyway, the New York state comptroller's office posted a page where you can enter in your zip code and see how the various service cuts are going to affect you. View the future of your rougher New York right here. Happy commuting.
Update: The MTA definitely approved the cuts and fair hikes this morning by a vote of 12-to-1, as per City Room. Subway fare hikes take effect May 31st, with commuter rails getting raised on June 1st, and bridge/tunnel tolls being increased in mid-July. On behalf of New Yorkers everywhere: this sucks.
