Low-cost airline Ryanair just floated the idea of charging for bathroom usage in-flight. They say that technically there's "no legal requirement for an aircraft to have a toilet on board," and that Ryanair is always on the lookout for ways to "lower the cost of air travel to make it affordable and easier for all passengers to fly with us." Already, passengers are expected to cough up for "extras" like baggage, in-flight meals, cell phone usage, and pillows, but for just using the necessary?
That seems a little harsh, not to mention short-sighted. Imagine the scenario: A man has a little too much to drink -- say, tequila. The tequila is mixing badly with the fish sticks he had just prior to the flight. Turbulence. He turns green. Runs for the john. Finds the john locked, only to be opened with correct change. Cannot find correct change fast enough. Vomits all over the place. Perhaps less grotesque but more likely are cases where passengers unsuccessfully attempt to "hold it," or even, god forbid, discreetly urinate into a convenient receptacle, Howard Hughes-style. Well, he was a fan of aviation, after all.
