Delta has joined six other airlines intent on making you a light packer; come December 5, they're enacting a $15 fee for your first checked bag and $25 for the second. Here's a quick list of who charges what. Strangely, no one's talking about reducing these fees, despite the plummeting cost of fuel ...

Delta $15 first bag, $25 second bag American: $15 first bag, $25 second bag Continental: $15 first bag, $25 second bag Northwest: $15 first bag, $25 second bag Spirit: $15 (Online) or $20 at the airport first bag, $25 second bag United: $15 first bag, $50 second bag US Airways: $15 first bag, $25 second bag

As it stands now, Southwest Airlines is the only major US airline still charging neither for your first nor your second bag. All other major carriers charge upwards of $25 for the second bag, even if there isn't a charge for the first.
