New York Water Taxi has big plans for Governors Island this summer. They want to take a parking lot on the north end of the island and make it a beach, with real sand and beach volleyball nets. Since Governors Island is technically in Manhattan, that would mean that the city proper would now have its very own beachfront property. Swimming would not be allowed, but there would be cafes and grilling, plus sound stages and basketball courts.
“Offering spectacular views of the Brooklyn and Manhattan skylines and the East River Bridges; Water Taxi Beach/Governors Island will be accessible from Lower Manhattan on the Governors Island Ferry departing from the Battery Maritime Building and by New York Water Taxi from Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens," says NYWT. There's a second "beach" in the works, also slated to be in Manhattan, but so far the word is mum on where that one will be. The only clue is from a cryptic quote from the PR mouthpiece: The beach “will be accessible by foot, car, bike and mass transit as well as by boat,” Uh. Brooklyn Heights? However, there are already rumors going around about what types of food will be served, with guesses for salads, wurst, tapas, and a raw bar.
