This is a technology blog right? I mean, we even talk about the same exact tech news on two separate occasions we’re so set in tech. So it is in the spirit of tech blogs that we welcome Time Inc.’s Techland, a blog that’s not really a blog because it’s owned and operated by Time Inc. It’s brand new and this time of night is all about reporting breaking new. Sadly, before we open our arms and let them into our insular world of KPIs and DPIs we must warn you: they use the word “nerd” ten times in the introductory post. I KNOW. Well, it goes to show you that just like their parent company they are tragically behind the eightball.com in the trends of ubiquitous online parlance. You’re not a nerd. You’re just on the internet. And so am I. So what’s going on with the site?
Lev Grossman, a sexy Michael Wolff for the 2.0 set, started the site based on his Nerd World blog and from the looks of things it could be a pretty little daily skim for people who take sugar and cream in their coffee. I worry about advertising all the time. Because it’s going unbelievably strong in distinctly different ways. You have the onslaught of increasingly subtle marketing that whispers sweet ads in your daily digest or finds its way into your subconscious through viral or guerilla marketing. And on the flipside you have what you saw when you got on this site more than likely. A GIANT AD that oh-where-the-fuck-is-that-close-button. Be it an interstitial, a takeover, a dropdown it’s part of an overt ownership of the individual experience. It’s sexy and overwhelms the senses. It’s a strip club and a casino. But these two extremes are where the playground kids in Advertising Park are pulling their Stretch Armstrong. I don’t really have a point I guess. It’s just when Time Inc. announces a blog that’s calling from inside the house like Techland it makes me think about pulling and pulling good ol’ Stretch until that goo comes dripping out its sides. After that, what’s the point?
