The humidity was heavy, but the sun hung in there, and the welcoming surf of Georgica Beach beckoned. So, how did we find ourselves snaking along Scuttlehole Road in Water Mill in bumper-to-bumper traffic?
Super Saturday, duh. We bravely made our way to Nova's Ark to do battle with the too-tanned social set for some serious deals at the tenth annual Super Saturday mega-sale. Proceeds went to the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund.
Anything for a good cause, and, if you're a celebor presidential hopefula photo op. Rudy and Judith Giuliani posed with an oversized plushy cow sporting a pink, spotted dress. (Say, did Judith and the cow conspire on those matching blue necklaces?) Donna Karan and Kelly Ripa hosted, Petra Nemcova and Christy Turlington Burns looked elegant despite the stifling heat, and Mandy Moore unloaded her clothing line (Well, that's one way to get rid of all that overstock).
Even the guys got in on the action. Russell Simmons was spotted tooling around with the Reverend Run. (The morning before, at a yoga class in Sag Harbor, the nice pregnant yoga lady instructor cheered him on in her dulcet voice: "You go, Russell." That Ujjayi breathing must've come in handy.)
GMC raffled off two cars to one lucky shopper. (Go to www.GMC.com/SuperSaturday to check it out, and to enter for a chance to win a brand new Acadia.) And that wasn't the only freebie to be had.
Celebs got their clothing comped at J Brand, where one of the owners told us, "I just give it to them." We also overheard the woman at the Calvin Klein booth gift Shoshanna Lonstein Gruss a pair of collection shoes (You're too nice!" Gruss cooed. In fact, she was just trying to clear her booth and make it to the buffet).
Plastic cups full of Perrier-Jouet helped Super shoppers (well, us) deal with the stress of battling socialites and celeb stylists at the 185 booths under the big tents.
Meanwhile, bronzed socialites and plump-lipped PR dollies dropped trou to squeeze into incredible deals on couture Gucci, Marc Jacobs, and 7 For All Mankind jeans. Oh, wait, that was us. The kind gals manning the 7 booth informed us that QVC cameras were filming just behind us, positioned for a full-moon rearview. "Hi, Mom!" we cheered, as we took home loads of (only slightly damaged) price-slashed jeans. Ray Rogers
Our photographer, Pierre Bordes, shows off the fruit of his hard labor. The day's big score? Snazzy Adam + Eve swim trunks for $30.
