There I sat, five years ago
In a lecture hall, in the back row
Trying to find something to peruse
And my friend, who couldn’t be sweeter
Invited me to Google Reader
And it became my default source of news

From early morning into late
We would share and we’d debate
The latest scoop from all our favorite sites
Each new bold link a firestorm
A race to be most well informed
Star and comment well into the night

Oh how we’d read, and read, and read!
Folders for each kind of feed
Local news, world, sports and A&E
Our friends’ and exes’ personal blogs
Sites with pics of fluffy dogs
Another world felt closer at our keys

And this week, how our hearts did ache
With indignation, Twitter quaked
At the thought of Reader shutting down
“Now how will we aggregate
story ideas to recreate?”
Asked interns at the pubs of world renown.

There may be other feed collections
With which to sate our old obsessions
“But,” we cry, “it just isn’t the same!”
Feels like on our loves, we’re cheating
If on another feed, we’re reading
But if it still works, I ask, what’s in a name?
