Dunkin' Donuts better watch out, as Canadian donut powerhouse Tim Hortons is moving in on prime DD turf. As we mentioned a few weeks back, the northern donuteria opened 12 locations in New York yesterday, including three in Penn Station. Each of the new Timmie's opened in an old DD location, which might give them a leg up on gaining customers who show up expecting the familiar double Ds but end up giving Horton's a spin instead.
What most non-Canadians don't know is that Timmie's is way more than a donut shop, as they also serve up fresh (and delicious) soups, sandwiches, chili, and wraps as well as bagels, yogurt, and other pastries. So far, the response has been positive. "This morning I was so excited!" said Elizabeth Oberlin, who has been a three-times-a-week Hortons fan in her native Rochester. "This is awesome. Their iced cappuccino is the best." Kevin Gamble, a Vancouver native working in New York, happily waved a small Canadian flag attached to the end of his pencil and had his photo taken at the counter. "I was very excited to come down," he said. "It means my frantic runs to Canada to buy tins of Tim Hortons ground coffee are over. Everything in New York is fantastic except the coffee. It's dreadful. It's watery." Whoa Kevin, them's fightin' words. I will definitely be checking out the Tim Hortons near me, as my favorite is the French vanilla.
