World’s Worst Airport

It may be satire, but this clip from The Onion about the world's most alienating airport reminds me of a few real life airports (JFK anyone? How about Mexico City?). My favorite part? The guy who gets "liar" written on his hand.

LAX Newsflash: $99 to JFK & Boston, Coolio’s Crack Rap

imageJetBlue has resorted to baseball jerseys to find their latest marketing campaigns. Currently you can take advantage of the "Manny Ramirez" sale which celebrates the baseball star's triumphant acquisition by the Los Angeles Dodgers. Manny, who was wooed with a $45 million two-year contract, is coming to play with the Dodgers fresh from an eight-year stint with the Boston Red Sox. Manny sports the number 99, which is what JetBlue is charging for one-way tickets between Los Angeles the airline's home base of JFK (or LA and Manny's former hometown of Boston). Coincidentally, turns out it's not such a great idea to pack crack cocaine on your flight to Tulsa.

Cathay Pacific Apologizes for Tantrum Video

imageThe folks over at Cathay Pacific are sending out a mea culpa for filming and then posting the hilarious video of the woman having a tantrum after missing her flight. Apparently, she's not too happy that her antics were on display for everyone to see; her YouTube video got over five million hits in the last three weeks. I guess they should have seen that one coming. According to the AP, "the Hong Kong airline said ... the worker who filmed the video has been disciplined but that another person posted the footage on YouTube."

New Meme Alert: Airport Tantrum Video

Just in case you haven't seen it yet: This woman missed her flight to San Francisco and freaks the hell out. The airline said it had been calling her to the gate, but when she didn’t respond, a baggage handler unloaded her bags from the aircraft and the crew closed the gate, per security requirements. It gets good around :44 when she flails around on the ground like a fish out of water. I have to admit, I've definitely felt this way after missing a flight, but I've never had the nerve to just let it all hang out like she does. Don't miss the first parody out of the gate, and prepare for many imitations to come.

Sleep in a Jumbo Jet @ Stockholm Airport

imageThe Stockholm airport is about to launch the first-ever "hostel in a jet" later this week. It's called the Jumbo Hostel. The story goes like this: Rich businessman + airplane fetish = accommodations for 72 just outside the entrance to Swedish hub Arlanda Airport. For around $300 a night, you too can enjoy sleeping inside the renovated Boeing 747; if you're lucky you might score one of the four rooms located in the original engines hanging off the wings.

Industry Insiders: Rick Blatstein, Mile High Maître d’

Industry Insiders: Rick Blatstein, Mile High Maître d’ Rick Blastein, CEO of OTG Management -- the masterminds behind Jet Blue’s new Terminal 5 -- on bringing New York's top flight dining scene to the airport and his plans for expansion.

What are your favorite restaurants outside of the airport? I like John Dory a lot, it just opened in the city on Prince street; it's a great place, the food is great, it's a great little hang, a lot of fun. I'm pretty much the type of person that goes whichever way the wind blows. I don't stay in one place, so wherever is new or interesting, I go there and hang out.

Is design a huge part of the success of T5? Design was a major part. We went to ICrave, who designed most of our restaurants and re:vive bars. They're a New York design firm that's just great -- the hair on the back of your neck stands up when you walk into their studios. Well, at least it did for me! They were really able to bring creativity and vision that I've never seen before.

Checking Airport Websites Before You Go

imageAfter you've researched and purchased your steal of a flight (OK, maybe "steal" is a stretch), don't stop there -- click on over to your departing (and arriving) airport's site and take a browse. Many airports now have real websites that give tons of useful information beyond the standard flight schedules and delays. There's also pertinent information like what's what with the ground transportation, parking, shopping, dining, and security line waits. Generally you can also find up-to-the-minute weather conditions as well as cultural links for the surrounding city. Aviation has a roundup of the top 10 airport websites (5 national and 5 international). The top 5 national sites include Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport, Chicago's O'Hare Airport, Dallas/Fort Worth Airport, Denver International Airport, and the San Francisco International Airport. Check out the full list, including the international hubs, here.

Dirty Hippies Take Over Burbank’s Hangar 25

imageIt's official. The eco-mafia is taking over California. Their latest hit, Hangar 25 at the Bob Hope Airport in Burbank. The first airplane hangar to receive LEED certification, H25 is a model of low-energy efficiency. All of the hangar's electricity is supplied through solar power, nixing the need for things like diesel oil needed to tow planes around. The concrete floor is diamond-polished for maximum light reflectivity and finished with non-toxic sealants.
