Alexander Wang Takes Swiss Textile Prize

Alexander Wang Takes Swiss Textile Prize Alexander Wang is at it again. The designer, who won the much-coveted CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Award last year, has taken the tile of Swiss Textile Award Winner of 2009. Last year the prize (which includes 100,000 euros) was granted to Rodarte; this year, Wang's competition included: Peter Pilotto, Erdem, Thakoon, Alexis Mabille, and Ohne Titel (a collectively lethal pool of talent). "To win this in Europe, against amazing European designers but also against designers like Thakoon and Ohne Titel who I have grown up beside, feels really special," Wang told Vogue UK.

Your Problem Is You Just Can’t Understand Alexander Wang’s $395 Biker Shorts

Your Problem Is You Just Can’t Understand Alexander Wang’s $395 Biker Shorts Few garments that have graced catwalks in recent seasons (save for perhaps Nina Ricci's FW09 8-inch heels, and now Alexander McQueen's SS10 monstrously tall shoes) have caused as much immediate controversy as Alexander Wang's biker shorts for this fall. The point of contention for consumers and critics alike: the shorts' $395 price tag. But ask Wang why exactly the capsule of cycling chic warrants such a seemingly exorbitant cost, and he'll tell you: "the yarn we use is from Italy, the technique is digital weaving, there's a lot that goes into product development that the consumer doesn't necessarily always understand," says The Cut. And, he'll add, "for the people that do understand it, they do get into it, they buy it, and those are the people I'm speaking to. And there will always be people that don't understand what you're doing, but I'm not here to satisfy everyone."

Spring Sunglasses: Alexander Wang, Olsen Twins, DVF, Albert Maysles

Spring Sunglasses: Alexander Wang, Olsen Twins, DVF, Albert Maysles Spring 2010 is the season to launch a sunglasses line. That is, if you're Alexander Wang, the Olsen twins, or Diane Von Furstenberg. While Wang showcased his premiere line of specs on his football-inspired SS10 runway at New York Fashion Week; the Olsens just released images of their soon-to-debut sunglasses, which they created in collaboration with seasoned design house Linda Farrow. Now DVF is adding the accessory into the brand's repertoire for spring. Even though images have yet to surface, the company's Facebook page confirms that the designer (who was recently mugged in Madrid, but fortunately ended up safe and sound) is thisclose to her eponymous eyewear launch: "Just wrapped our eyewear shoot ... stay tuned for behind the scenes photos (and the eyewear launch in November!)."

Fashion Week Crisis: Ousted Sugababe Keisha Buchanan’s Breakdown

Fashion Week Crisis: Ousted Sugababe Keisha Buchanan’s Breakdown Alas! What would any Fashion Week be without tears, bloodshed, and a bitchy mutiny? Irrelevant. And so, last night brought the melodrama in a big way at a party at the Red Bull Fashion Factory -- which is where Vivienne Westwood revealed her latest Red Label collection recently. But first, the thumbnail! According to Wikipedia, the Sugababes "[were] formed in 1998 by original members Keisha Buchanan, Mutya Buena and Siobhan Donaghy. After some initial success, Donaghy left the group and there was the introduction of Heidi Range in 2001 ... The band survived a second line-up change in 2005, when Mutya Buena left and was replaced by Amelle Berrabah. In September 2009, it was announced that after 11 years in the group, Keisha Buchanan had departed the group and been replaced by Jade Ewen."

Fashion Week School Daze

Fashion Week School Daze Fashion is going prep, and I don't just mean the fact that Harvard is moonlighting as a fashion house. Just in time for "back to school," collegiate nostalgia seems to be sweeping the fashion community here at New York Fashion Week. Saturday, Alexander Wang showed an entire SS10 collection whose inspiration was seemingly sourced from a high school football locker-room, albeit with looks intended for ladies only. (To boot, his after-party was held in a gas station on the West Side Highway -- spending Saturday night partying at a gas station? Hello high school.) Meanwhile, both Opening Ceremony (via a collaboration with Pendleton) and Balenciaga are offering up varsity jackets for FW09.

Alexander Wang as “Perv” & Garance Dore T-Shirts

Alexander Wang as “Perv” & Garance Dore T-Shirts New York Fashion Week is still over a week away, but that doesn't mean designers aren't slowly but surely divulging specifics on the shapes their SS10 collections will take. According to the Cut, Alexander Wang is channeling his inner "perv" for his latest collection, while Proenza Schouler's designs should call to mind a stylish "off-shore" castaway. Specifically, NYFW's leading designers have handed over one or two-word responses regarding the inspirations behind their respective collections. While most answers are less literal, Alice + Olivia kept things simple; their latest designs are inspired by rockers the Plasticines.

Men's Style has a first look at the line, which they say is chock-full of "tees, tanks, hoodies, and button-downs that make up the collection all share the lived-in softness and stretched-out fits of a much-laundered favorite shirt, thanks to Vietnamese-made fabrics developed exclusively for the line."

Fashion Mafia Pays Tribute to New Garde

Fashion Mafia Pays Tribute to New Garde The CFDA held its annual awards ceremony in New York last night, honoring a rising generation of fashion power players, as well as First Lady Michelle Obama (who accepted the commendation of Board of Directors’ Special Tribute via satellite). CFDA President Diane Von Furstenberg held court, while Tracey Ullman hosted. The latter opened the ceremony with a Keifer Sutherland head-butting joke, which garnered only "weak laughter," says Fashionologie. It probably didn't help matters that Jack McCollough, half of the design team behind Proenza Schouler (who won the title of Accessories Designer of the Year) and the recipient of said head-butt post-Costume Gala, was in attendance.
