U2, Courtney Love, and Scarlett Johansson to Play Gavin Friday’s Birthday

U2, Courtney Love, and Scarlett Johansson to Play Gavin Friday’s Birthday Sure, in ways, it's an unlikely if disparate meshing of talent. But this concert, the latest in a series of events produced to fight the spread in AIDS in Africa as a part of (RED)NIGHTS, finds an anchor in celebrated singer-composer-painter Gavin Friday, a childhood friend of Bono. His band is among those performing. Other performers besides Johansson and Love include Antony Hegarty, Rufus Wainwright, Martha Wainwright (last seen celebrating Édith Piaf), Andrea Corr (yes, of those Corrs), Laurie Anderson, and perennial post-punk princess Lydia Lunch.

Casting America’s Next Top Simon Cowell

imageIf Susan Boyle's upset is to be believed, then maybe the time for Simon Cowell to pursue other endeavors that don't involve tearing down the dignity of doe-eyed hopefuls on national television couldn't be more perfect. The breath of fresh air American Idol has been chasing for a few seasons now may finally arrive with the departure of Cowell's acerbic asides. So instead of mourning Simon the Great as he goes back to the UK to lord over Britain's Got Talent and X-Factor, let's do what we Americans do best when one of our cultural fixtures defects: Replace him! But with whom?

Industry Insiders: Eric Omores, Beach Bigwig

Industry Insiders: Eric Omores, Beach Bigwig Eric Omores, partner of the global Nikki Beach empire, parties during the day, plots for St. Barth’s, arm-wrestles with Bono, and passes out with his laptop at night.

Point of Origin: I was born in Senegal and grew up in Paris. That's where I studied and went to school at the National School on the Rue Blanche that trains for acting. But I was studying engineering [at] the only Tiada school that has about six aspects of show business.

Wait a sec: the saloon-keeper is an actor/engineer? It was a great school because we had an account that let us see all the shows in Paris: Tiada music halls, concerts, everything but the Paris Opera. Since I did engineering training, after school I went on the road with a couple of singers. I had the hang for traveling, and Club Med was hiring to set up sound and light all over the world. So, for two years I used my engineering degree to wire Club Med.

Fashion Celebrities Customize Trashy Cans

Fashion Celebrities Customize Trashy Cans Turning their attention curbside, fashion and pop culture notables are getting down and dirty for charity. “Have you ever walked by the back of a restaurant at night?” asks fashion designer Michael Bastian. “It’s insane how much food goes to waste, those huge garbage bins full of stuff.” Waste and its whiff of economic imbalance led Bastian, the creative director of menswear atBill Blass, to partner with Danish design company Vipp, creating a one-off receptacle inspired by the current varsity theme of his eponymous line. “It’s a big, sexy football trashcan,” he reveals.

Palazzo Chupi: The Pink Elephant

imageJulian Schnabel is trying to convince Manhattanites that pink is the new granite, but nobody's buying it. Literally. The Schnabel-designed Palazzo Chupi -- a Malibu Barbie tower which turns living on the Hudson into a vacation in Venice -- is having problems attracting residents. It was recently revealed that Richard Gere has been secretly selling his customized 4 bedroom, 4-bathroom pad for $17,995,000 (with a celebrity-style $4 million markup), and he's never even moved in. There was gossip about Bono looking at a place, but nothing came of that. Madonna opted out because it wasn't "child-friendly." For all the publicity and associations with stars, the only resident we can positively identify is some guy from Credit Suisse. We'll gladly be friends with him though, especially if he ever decides to throw a house party.
