‘BUTT’ Magazine Wishes Us an Assy 2010

‘BUTT’ Magazine Wishes Us an Assy 2010 Admit it: we've all read it. After getting the perfunctory chuckle that never gets tired out of the way, we find ourselves in line at American Apparel, a jersey something or other draped over our arm, clutching an issue of BUTT Magazine. Despite its callow name, BUTT, one of the Netherlands' finer literary exports, is now 27 issues into its enigmatically successful run and boasts an enviable posterior of accomplished and culturally necessary photographers, writers, and other figures, including John Waters, Bruce LaBruce, Michael Stipe, and Terrence Koh. Touted as a gay magazine, it certainly is, but with an indie spin that has gained it subcultural notoriety. Part zine, part nudie mag of men, for men, BUTT is unequivocally tasteful, probably the reason Taschen crafted the first five years' issues into a collectible tome.

Burgos: Fashion Capital of the World?

Burgos: Fashion Capital of the World? Live from Burgos, fashion capitol of the world! Where? It might sound a little more convincing if Bruno had said it, but still, the tiny hillside town in the middle of nowhere, Spain, remains an oft-overlooked spot on the Iberian map, until now.
Population roughly 178,000, Burgos sits in the cusp of the Castilla y Leon regions of Spain and though "made in Burgos" never really makes it onto the tag of your cardi, this cultural hub is the birthing ground of many of the world's most exotic fabrics. So what comes first, the fabric or the designer? Look no further for the answer to that one than the illustrious shows of Burgos Fashion Week, a sartorial parade with a cachet all its own. It's just like New York, sans the ruched jersey-clad, City-watching wannabes committing seat theft for the sake of a Fame Game hit). Runways showcased the wearable and the "what the....?" from a venerable lineup of designers, rookie and veteran alike, for an ooh'ing audience of new fans and seasoned devotees. We had the pleasure and privilege of attending the best of the best, and rather than try to explain the fashion ruckus through mere words, we took a turn for the tech and got savvy with our Mac and churned out a few well-curated videos of the best and brightest.

A Book Titled Prada

A Book Titled Prada Today's brisk morning found New York's fashion set SoHo-bound, but instead of queuing for yet another sample sale, they sidled into Prada's artistically palatial store on Prince Street for the unveiling of their newest creative fare - -the Prada book. Just what we need, another fashion book telling us what to wear, when to wear it, what to pair it with and flashing papparazzi pics of all sorts of celebs wearing it before. Thankfully, there's none of that in the new take-away tome simply entitled Prada. Arguably the most desired geometric shape in the world, the inverted triangle is worth very little by itself; that is until P-R-A-D-A is stamped inside, giving it a life -- and subsequent price tag -- worthy of a legacy.

Georgia Jagger: What’s Up with Versace’s Face?

Georgia Jagger: What’s Up with Versace’s Face? I've the overseas buzz at Grazia to thank for this early-morning tidbit of news -- Georgia Jagger, one of the more overlooked of Mick's offspring (I always thought she was Jade after a good night's rest) has just signed on to be the newest ingenue sporting the disappointingly wearable current fares of Versace. (This follows on the release of Jagger's campaign for Rimmel.) Not that Versace needs a new face aside from matron Donatella's unique mug, burned into our retinas after a recent string of unintelligible interviews, but nonetheless the 17-year-old will play dress up for Mario Testino and grace the stack of opening ads in our Vogues and Ws and Elles, her barely post-pubescent face sporting makeup her mother, model Jerry Hall, barely wore even in the 70s. A weird fit that really causes us to ask -- how does Versace choose their spokespeople?

Stella McCartney Steps Down

Stella McCartney Steps Down Some of the best news we've heard in a long time. Coveted designer Stella McCartney has stepped down -- literally -- to meet the eye and wardrobe needs of her younger clientele. No stranger to collaborations with mega retailers, McCartney has decided to ride the wave of her uber-successful jaunt with H&M and partnered with GapKids and babyGap for a limited edition (read: this stuff's gonna sell) fall/winter collection, and to the delight of many a gay boy in the making, she didn't stop at girls.

Runway Makeup Your Way

Runway Makeup Your Way While it's true that the term "seasonal makeup" is responsible for such anomalies as orange eyeshadow -- and my personal favorite, the "Jersey Spray-Tan Effect" -- the cooler months provide the perfect opportunity to go a little heavier-handed on your favorite colors and make things a little more dramatic. So where better than the very runways that line your closets and satisfy your cravings to find inspiration for the new you for fall? Our favorites for fall/winter happened to be more dramatic than everyday allows, so we contacted Raychel Wade, the authority on everything beauty and owner of cosmetic resource CheektoChic.com to help us translate the season's hottest makeup from drag queen to wearable drama using her favorite La Prairie products.

Becoming Mark Ronson with Gucci

Becoming Mark Ronson with Gucci Well, kind of. The recent collaboration between the mixing maestro and Gucci creative director Frida Giannini that yielded the funkiest crop of sneakers we've ever seen was an occasion to change the topography of Manhattan, literally busting out with a temporary store at 43 Crosby Street, open today until early November. And while the shiny, sterile interior of the ICONTemporary outpost will no doubt provide a retail refuge for fashion's savviest, like everything Gucci, the real fun begins with what you end up taking home.

An Intimate Collaboration for 2(x)ist

An Intimate Collaboration for 2(x)ist 2(x)ist is basically like the Victoria's Secret for dudes -- underwear that does more than just keep the boys close to home, it provides something extra to look at when you're lounging around in the skivvs, and just think of all the scientific research that goes into ensuring a fit does more than support the goods. Before this enigmatic name in undergarments hit the scene, we had little more than black, white, and the occasional gray palette to accent the bare, but now even underthings experience seasonal change (and we're not referring to holiday prints). But for the first time, the underwear wizards have ventured to concentrate on what's on the outside and collaborated with one of the newest menswear go-tos, Commonwealth Utilities.

Amazing Baby, Rewild

Maybe it’s because their songs owe a great debt to the Stone Roses and Frank Zappa, or perhaps it’s because all five of them have long, messy hair, but Amazing Baby, the Brooklyn-based heirs apparent to MGMT, have been pigeonholed as “drugged-out nudist hippies”—even before the release of their debut album.

Style Guru Tells Us What’s Up

Style Guru Tells Us What’s Up The opulence of this morning's Ralph Lauren show sounded the long-awaited death knell to New York Fashion Week, signaling an opportunity for the downtrodden to give their livers a rest and catch up on sleep. A week of triple-booked shows, bloody blisters and stolen front row seats has yielded hundreds of new collections, and though the first issues of '10 will be volcanoes of spring fashion, we tapped into one of the city's brightest know-it-alls for the cream of the culture crop, Gio Metodiev, to give us his Loves it! Hates it! and everything in between.
