Coachella Compressed

Want to experience the three-day desert festival in four minutes? Well, now you can. Titled "Everything Happening at the Same Time," which also happens to be the soundtrack for the compressed video, the film shows the giant festival on fast forward. Watch as the sun rises and people fill up the grassy spaces over and over again. It's almost better than being there live. Considerably less smelly in fact.

The Most Beautiful People at Coachella 2009

The Most Beautiful People at Coachella 2009 Karen O shook her dangling giant polka dots off her Christian Joy-designed glam-slam dress like a ladder to the sun. Devendra Banhart worked some pre-season summer short-shorts. New mom M.I.A. came blazing back in a colorful military top and a captain's hat. But they weren't the only style stars at Coachella's tenth anniversary blowout this weekend. Here, an off-stage look at the musicians (from Perry Farrell to the Presets) and music-lovers whose wardrobes hit all the right notes. See the full gallery here. Photography by Myles Pettengill.

The Coachella Recap

imageCoachella has happened. It's done and over. But if you are like me and you didn't go physically, and you are on Twitter (I'm @tromano), you got to experience it via digital osmosis in 140 characters. It was through a friend's tweet that I learned that for all the celebrity star power in the desert, sometimes even being a pop culture phenomenon/heiress gets you nowhere. For example!

Coachella or Bust!

imageNot surprisingly, half of Los Angeles is gone, having headed en masse to Indio, Cali, where everyone is about to get their Coachella on. Roxy owner and rock 'n' roll royalty Nic Adler is already out in the desert. He and his cohorts were treated to a soundcheck last night by none other than Sir Paul McCartney. What makes this already-sweet treat doubly delish? McCartney soundchecked some Beatles tunes. To quote Adler’s Facebook message to me: “OMG.” Nic also gives us a sneak preview of what to expect from the rest of the fest.

Coachella iPhone App Is Awesome

imageIn just over a week, the crowds and the bands will descend on Palm Springs, ready for yet another year of pure rocking out. This year, though, the Coachella iPhone App will make it totes easier to get from gig to gig with less hassle.

M.I.A Replaces Amy Winehouse at Coachella

M.I.A Replaces Amy Winehouse at Coachella The organizers of Coachella finally read my post decrying Paul McCartney's headlining slot at their annual festival and added M.I.A. to Saturday's lineup in an attempt to return the fest to its former glory. The announcement came via Twitter, and will mark her first time onstage since giving birth to baby Ickitt.

Coachella 2009 Lineup Announced

Coachella 2009 Lineup Announced The Coachella lineup is here and despite less-than-stellar headliners, it's predictably solid. Scroll through and you'll find the usual list of MySpace bands, cred-delivering rappers, DJ/producers, still-relevant legends, and nude-Scrabble-playing-retro-soul singers. But the crown jewel of any festival is its headlining acts, bands that are too good to play in daylight. But are Paul McCartney, The Killers, and The Cure most worthy of a lightshow? I know Sir Paul is a legend and all, and yes, he'll placate with Beatles standards like "Yesterday," and "Let it Be," but what about his other stuff? You know, the solo stuff that no one at Coachella has heard. McCartney plays adult contempo, and his songs are made for your parents car stereo.

Coachella Without the Dehydration

As if our lives weren't already filled with disappointment, Coachella is this weekend in Indio, CA, and we're not going. Overpriced water and relentless sun become trivial when acts like Aphex Twin are followed by Animal Collective who is followed by M.I.A. (that's not a confirmed order, but you get it). The benevolent folks over AT&T feel your pain. Last year, they broadcast select acts from the festival live via that screen you're always staring at these days, and they're doing it again for you in 2008. If you take a trip to AT&T's Blue Room, you'll get to watch three days of Coachella acts live, in a space where the sun don't shine and water roams free.

Prince at Coachella: Art or Commercial?

imagePerfumer, musician, and world's sexiest vegetarian Prince will headline the second day of the Coachella music festival (April 25-27) in Indio, California. Reportedly paid $4.8 million for the performance, his last-minute addition to the lineup has fueled speculation that he was only brought in to boost ticket sales. We're not so much buying that argument, though. It's not like Portishead, the Raconteurs, Death Cab for Cutie, Aphex Twin, the Breeders, Fatboy Slim, M.I.A., the National, Hot Chip, Animal Collective, Kate Nash, Vampire Weekend, etc., etc, are nobodies, especially for the typical Coachella audience. Did they even need Prince? But maybe we're just being naïve. Deja-vu: In 2006, Madonna was added a few weeks before the festival -- and they did offer Morrissey $5 million (which he turned down) for a reunion of The Smiths. Whatever the reason Prince arrives, it's his first U.S. festival appearance ever. And if his show-stealing 2007 Super Bowl performance is any indication, it should prove spectacular.
