Runway Makeup Your Way

Runway Makeup Your Way While it's true that the term "seasonal makeup" is responsible for such anomalies as orange eyeshadow -- and my personal favorite, the "Jersey Spray-Tan Effect" -- the cooler months provide the perfect opportunity to go a little heavier-handed on your favorite colors and make things a little more dramatic. So where better than the very runways that line your closets and satisfy your cravings to find inspiration for the new you for fall? Our favorites for fall/winter happened to be more dramatic than everyday allows, so we contacted Raychel Wade, the authority on everything beauty and owner of cosmetic resource CheektoChic.com to help us translate the season's hottest makeup from drag queen to wearable drama using her favorite La Prairie products.

Pretty in Pink at Custo Barcelona

Pretty in Pink at Custo Barcelona Custo Barcelona made a splashy debut at the tents over the weekend showcasing an "air show," as designer Custo Dalmau called it, which focused on the texture and lightness of his carefree frocks, bathing suit cover-ups and airy suits. It was a poppy debut that played with texture (yarn and chiffon) and shape (bra tops with sarongs skirts). But makeup took center stage to really drive Custo's concept home. Though giant pop art red lips appeared on several of the wispy dresses, the makeup was ostensibly light, pairing fluffy blowouts with peachy-pink eyeshadow and rosy cheeks. Seeing pink is not cause for alarm during spring fashion shows, but it's significant that the makeup trend was also apparent on fall runways. Are fashion houses looking out for the penny-pinching consumer trying to stretch their purchases?

Blood Is the New Makeup: ‘New Moon,’ ‘Jennifer’s Body,’ & Lady Gaga

Blood Is the New Makeup: ‘New Moon,’ ‘Jennifer’s Body,’ & Lady Gaga Robert Pattinson and Megan Fox make sucking it sexy, Lady Gaga accessorized last night's VMA performance with it, and HBO makes it True: Blood is having its moment. While sporting a pair of plastic fangs is only cool in a middle school cafeteria, and stage blood should stay on stage (though it also makes unnecessary appearances in middle school cafeterias), fashion houses like Alexander McQueen, Bottega Veneta, and Dolce & Gabbana have made fashionable interpretations of all the pop culture gore, sending modern-day vamps down their fall runways. With variations of pale skin, dramatic eyes, and blood-red lips, the look is perfect for a little bloodletting after hours, and with a few tweaks, can also be wearable at your day job.

Fashion Week Forecast: Buy Beauty for Both Seasons

Fashion Week Forecast: Buy Beauty for Both Seasons One of the best things about modern technology is its immediacy. Last night I knew where I needed to be that second to see Daria and Lily having a dance off for Fashion's Night Out thanks to Twitter (they were cutting a rug at Indochine). Likewise, the instantaneous photo uploads from the runways help me plan ahead, save money, and invest in the right beauty products. To really squeeze my dollar, I usually wait to do any kind of fall shopping until fashion week is over, so I can get a good look at what the spring shows boast, in order have some insight into what trends will last. Though the shows have only recently commenced, I've already made a short list of beauty trends that seem to be transcending seasons. Here's a preview what to buy now, judging from the runway faces that will make the easiest transition from winter to spring.

Morning After Beauty: Fake Bright Eyes

Morning After Beauty: Fake Bright Eyes I love it when beauty editors offer up their prowess on the perfecting the elusive five minute face. I love it because it's humorous. I've tried every single short-cut tip, and I can tell you from experience: just because they are using MAC's Cream Colour Base because of its "versatility," doesn't mean you are going to be able to apply it any quicker with bar music is still ringing in your ear. Take last night: gin and tonics at Smith & Mills. This morning: Tired, unwashed skin, and bags -- not of the Bottega Veneta variety. On mornings like this, the last thing on my still-drunk mind is rushing through a regimen that is only under five minutes when done by a makeup pro backstage during Fashion Week. Thankfully, there really is a five minute face to fake awake -- curated not by a seasoned beauty editor, but by a seasoned bar hopper.

Dior Kicks Off Paris Couture

Dior Kicks Off Paris Couture Paris is once again aflame with the fashion set as the Bitter Editor violently sips champagne (I mean, something's got to extinguish the flame of envy as I battle between incoming images of breathtaking dresses and mobile messages from friends synchronously sipping their libations albeit in a much more fabulous environment) and continues his tirade to tackle the look-by-look opulence technology provides. Actually, while Alexis Mabille commenced Paris' Haute Couture 2010 shows this year, it was the fourth show of the day, Christian Dior Haute Couture, of course, that set off the furor.

Dior Confronts Recession by Doing What Dior Does Best

imageFittingly, the Parisian fashion house of Dior was the first to take the stage at this week’s Spring/Summer couture collection presentations in France’s capital city. With a parade of models donning elaborate and colorful classic Dior concoctions, designer John Galliano put the message across that there is in fact a way in which high fashion can “respond aesthetically to the recession.” And, in Dior’s case, it was, simply, to do Dior.

Stoning Sharon

Stoning Sharon As we all know, Sharon Stone is a bit of an oversharer. She overshared her cervix for a shitty movie. She overshared her Gap-loving, anti-bourgeois bourgeoisie at the Academy Awards. Now, at Cannes, she recently overshared about karma with reference to the Tibetan plight and the Chinese earthquake. New York's Jessica Coen, speculating on Dior's decision to remove Stone's image from all Chinese stores and advertisements, asks, Was it Karma? To be honest, the irony of Stone's comeuppance had occurred to us as well, but as blog commenter "magnetogurl" makes clears, "The author apparently does not understand karma either. If the rule follows, then Sharon Stone will be a harried LVMH executive in a thankless job doing damage control for a mouthy spokeswoman in her next life." Wow, karma's never been that bitchy. Video of the enlightenment after the jump.
