What Japan Thinks of the American Police

Police officers in the United States are regarded with a mixture of respect and disdain, probably in accordance with which side of the baton you end up on. There's the endless jokes about cops eating donuts and being too hefty to really give chase to a criminal, but then again, if you're in trouble, who are you going to call? That's right, you're going to call blue. However, whatever we might think about our law enforcement squads, it's far more interesting to see what other countries think about them. Especially when their views must have been formed from bootleg episodes of COPS and the Simpsons. After the jump, check out the hilarious Japanese magazine cover featuring a chubby cop chowing down on a table stacked with fast food from McDonald's and Carl's Jr, with an errant taco thrown in for good measure.

Less Fusion, More Tradition. The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (or LACMA, if you're lazy) is featuring a show of exclusively traditional Japanese artwork that closes on September 14, 2008. Forgoing large-breasted heroines and other animé tropes that seem to be fixtures in most Japanese art lately, the show is an exciting throwback to nature and a less discordant, complicated time, before the advent of Tokyo Disneyland, when artists painted with watercolors and focused on subjects like tigers and herons.
