The stigma surrounding shopping malls is dissipating. Shopping chain stores and slurping down a Jamba Juice in the process is garnering newfound acceptance as a sartorial pastime. And apparently it's a movement of which Justin Timberlake is a fan. Back in September, the pop star-turned-fashion designer announced for that William Rast, the clothing line he founded alongside Trace Ayala, would soon be setting up its first freestanding shop (which is now newly opened at the Westfield Century City mall in Los Angeles). Apparently the next 40-50 William Rast stores opening between now and 2010 will be in malls as well.

During my entire undergrad stint at McGill University in Montreal, the only film ever shot on campus (besides crappy student ones) was Abandon, that throwaway thriller starring Julia Roberts' ex-squeeze toy Benjamin Bratt, Katie Holmes before she was kidnapped by Tom Cruise, and Zooey Deschanel before me and every other guy who dances poorly to Passion Pit fell in love with her. The whole escapade was no big deal, and campus authorities felt no need to tell students that C-list celebrities were invading their campus. Not so at Johns Hopkins University, where a pretty big deal of a movie starts shooting on campus beginning November 2nd.

So: word has it that Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel have broken up, even though People got an exclusive from some PR rep telling them that everything's just fine. Bullshit. Justin Timberlake being single is good for music, and his next single -- whatever it's going to be, if this is true -- will be spectacular. Here's why:

The struggling retail market isn't keeping Justin Timberlake from opening his first standalone store for the clothing line William Rast, which he co-founded with Trace Ayala. According to Women's Wear Daily, the label "is expected to turn a profit this year and has plans to open some 40 boutiques over the next several years, with three leases already signed." The first will be Westfield Century City (an outdoor mall packing everything from Zara and Houston's to Bloomingdales) in Timberlake's hometown of Los Angeles. Regardless of whether or not you're a fan of the line, Timberlake deserves some respect for being one of the few celebrity fashion designers to keep their line afloat amid the recession (ahem, Sarah Jessica Parker, Lauren Conrad, et al).

Leona Lewis is like your most cherished carafe of bum wine. After a break-up, a firing, or a surprise eviction, there she is, ready to console you at day's end. Her lyrics are most generic, her voice is pretty indistinct. Still. A gulp from one of her airy, broadly-penned three-and-a-half minute pop romps makes you feel less terrible. What's that Leona? You keep bleeding love? Well I suppose your troubles with hemophilia at least put my own worries into perspective. Thanks! However, her newest single, "Don't Let Me Down" -- produced by Justin Timberlake and Timbaland -- is starting to trickle across the internet ahead of its Official Release Date. And SiCo's pissed. In fact, he's tapped the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry's anti-internet theft forces to source this leak and plug it.

So this past holiday weekend, while most of us plebes tore into the flesh of dead animals with our jagged teeth, spittle and pork chunks flying everywhere, a random cross-section of famous people opted to make time for the memory of Michael Jackson on America's 233rd birthday -- whether they raised a toast in honor of our dearly departed king or spat on his cold corpse. And to those expectorating, pull your collars up, because if your necks get any redder, those blisters are never going to heal. Obviously, as with every culture, there's a right way and a wrong way to honor the dead. And the holiday provided examples of both.

Both have been spotted sporting thick-rimmed, Clark Kent-ish glasses recently (the former wore a pair to a birthday party Daphne Guiness threw for Steven Klein at the Standard hotel earlier this week, while the latter sported an identical set to the Costume Gala at the Met last night).
