Cross-Dressing at Fashion Week

Cross-Dressing at Fashion Week Although few of the attendees at Elise Overland's SS10 show Sunday were the wiser, there was something off about the last look shown on Overland's runway. It's not that the show, chock-full of sumptuous leather cocktail dresses, slick leather-paneled leggings and stunning silk creations, was a miss as far as the clothes were concerned. Simply, the last model who strutted the runway was indeed a man (albeit one moonlighting as a woman with fake boobs, high-heels and slicked back hair). And Overland isn't alone this season when it comes to dabbling in cross-dressing.

Working Titel: Designing Duo Ohne Titel Storm Fashion’s Frontlines

Working Titel: Designing Duo Ohne Titel Storm Fashion’s Frontlines Flora Gill is a fashion victim -- literally. One-half of the New York-based label Ohne Titel, alongside Alexa Adams, Gill was blinded by the bright lights at a Calvin Klein and Visionaire party the night before her BlackBook shoot and interview; hence, the dark sunglasses she kept on while inside their Chelsea studio. But no one would accuse these two designers, or the women who wear their fierce creations, of being soft -- or anything other than fashionably forward. “Personally, we have very different styles,” says Adams, “but the way in which we critique each other and unite makes something completely different and stronger, rather than just being about one viewpoint.”

Paris Couture Shows: Chanel

Paris Couture Shows: Chanel All I can say for Karl Lagerfeld's Chanel 2010 Couture collection is that it was unmistakably Chanel. All the trademark tailoring and adornments were there - -black lace, ruched chiffon, tiered dresses, wool boucle, textured prints, sequins, and a series of requisite suits. This time around, however, Lagerfeld got a little adventurous and tried some new detail on for size.

Karl Lagerfeld Out at Chanel?

Karl Lagerfeld Out at Chanel? A juicy piece of gossip is floating around the fashion blogosphere regarding the one and only Karl Lagerfeld. According to Diane Pernet of A Shaded View on Fashion: "This is not a fact until you officially read it somewhere else but rumour has it that Karl Lagerfeld will not renew his contract at Chanel and that Albert Elbaz will take his place and Olivier Theyskens will take Albert's place at Lanvin. Both choices make perfect sense to me. Schaparelli has decided to change directions and do a not so expensive line. Nothing is engraved in cement, these are still just rumours you will have to wait and see." If true, the sartorial switch-up would be one for the fashion history books, as Lagerfeld is unlikely to take over at another fashion house post-exiting Chanel.

Karl Lagerfeld Embraces His Inner Villain

imageKarl Lagerfeld is headed for the silver screen. And, no, the fashion designer and face behind Chanel -- who recently debuted a short viral video in honor of the Parisian house's namesake -- isn't doing it in the capacity of director (à la Tom Ford). The Kaiser will "lend his famous tones to a French animated feature film called Totally Spies," says Reuters.

Diego Garcia Goes Solo

Diego Garcia Goes Solo After a few years, when you don’t hear about a notable artist you’ve come to know and love, you often wonder where they’ve gone. Typically, they’re up to something. Case in point with Diego Garica -- lead singer of New York City-based band Elefant and man about town. Rest assured, Diego's been hard at work at a new pursuit: crafting music solo. Diego first came onto the music scene around the same time I started to write about music. Back in 2003, he was one of the first artists I ever interviewed. We’ve remained friends through the years, and he’d give me updates along the way about new work. One night in particular, back in January of this year, I bumped into him at the Bowery Ballroom after seeing The Sword perform. Within seconds, right in the middle of Bowery’s beer-drenched floor, I found a set of headphones on my ears. “Jessica, you have to hear this new song I just recorded tonight,” said Diego.

Ex-Assistant on Karl Lagerfeld: “Unbelievable Narcissist”

Ex-Assistant on Karl Lagerfeld: “Unbelievable Narcissist” An ex-Lagerfeld assistant has penned a revealing tome about the iconic designer who heads a namesake ready-to-wear line as well as Chanel. And it doesn’t look as though 37-year-old Arnaud Maillard is holding much back about the Kaiser. Titled Merci Karl!, the book, as Maillard puts it, intends to reveal “a different side” of Lagerfeld. Specifically, the side that “needs an eternity to get ready in the morning,” Maillard told Germany’s Spiegel. As for the distinct narcissism: “he takes photos of himself at every photo shoot and puts them everywhere. He surrounds himself with a kind of royal court, nobody disagrees with him.”

Karl Lagerfeld Introduces Mink Helmets to Compliment Chanel Segway

Karl Lagerfeld Introduces Mink Helmets to Compliment Chanel Segway If there are two things designer Karl Lagerfeld loves most in this world, they are luxury and music. The face behind both an eponymous ready-to-wear line and Parisian fashion house Chanel owns upwards of 40 iPods and is constantly shifting from contemporary tunes to classical and back again. So it’s no surprise that the Kaiser incorporated music into his namesake FW09 collection presentation in Paris this week. What was shocking were the mink-covered scooter helmets (equipped with iPod capability) that Lagerfeld created in collaboration with helmet mavens Les Ateliers Ruby and Apple and subsequently sent down the aforementioned catwalk. (Especially considering Chanel's Spring 09 haute couture presentation featured headgear constructed from recession-friendly office paper.)

Paris Fashion Week: Chanel

Paris Fashion Week: Chanel The front row at Chanel for Paris Fashion Week bustled with the likes of Kate Moss and Claudia Schiffer while bouclé oversized hats and modern versions of power suits matched with chiffon ruffled collars and sleeve details paraded through a maze of what seemed to be an endless door into infinity. There were loads of Karl Lagerfeld's signature black and white lace and chiffon pieces, bits of pink and green oversized knitwear, and sexy yet chic sequin and leather mini dresses.

Fashion’s Mrs. Robinson Complex

Fashion’s Mrs. Robinson Complex Chalk it up to "new nostalgia" or supermodels making a comeback, but the fashion industry’s MILF fixation is in full effect. Earlier this week, Madonna made headlines yet again thanks to a steamy new Steven Klein-photographed W spread that features the Material Mom in a lavish, light-filled Brazilian home, flanked by a handful of gorgeous twenty-something, half-naked Brazilian boys. In a biblically confusing series of events, adding fuel to the press-storm is the fact that one of the male models in question, Jesus Luz, has become Madonna’s real life companion.
