Los Angeles: Top 10 Grub Trucks

Los Angeles: Top 10 Grub Trucks Everything in Los Angeles seems to be on wheels -- including some of the best places to eat. Sadly, east-side favorite Taco Zone is out of commission following a fire -- no one was harmed, just the tacos -- and we look forward to returning to the Silver Lake staple soon. Meanwhile, today's top contenders.

Kogi Korean BBQ - A blend of Mexican fare and Korean cooking, this truck has 31,000 stalkers via Twitter. With inventive cuisine like the Korean short ribs taco and taro chips made fresh daily, prepare to wait in line for an hour or more with the other disciples.
The Green Truck - This eco-friendly taco truck serves locally grown, organic, sustainably raised meals and can even run on vegetable oil. But green doesn’t come cheap: The ahi poke tacos with citrus and cilantro marinade and pineapple salsa will set you back $11.
Don Chow Tacos - Clearly inspired by Kogi, new-to-the-scene Don Chow Tacos pairs Mexican and Chinese cuisines. Try the soy-ginger tofu taco -- tasty as it is trendy.

Venice Gets an Intelligentsia Coffee

Venice Gets an Intelligentsia Coffee Though it is part of a major metropolis, Venice, the hippie 'hood by the beach, is really a very small town. Extremely small. Basically, a village with 300 people -- all of whom are painfully hip. In New York, the opening of a coffee shop with a cult-like following, featuring a DJ and free beer, food, and wine (and coffee) would be the thing you stop by first, on your way to many other activities. But in Venice, the opening of the Eastside fave coffeehouse Intelligentsia was the main event. Nay, it was the only event.

Ivan Kane Keeps You Drunk & Fed During the Depression

imageIt's lunchtime, and I'm getting hungry and thirsty. A food and drinks post is in order. The taco truck results are in: Kogi, the famed rising star, and probably the only Korean BBQ taco truck in the known universe, did not win LA Taco's face-off. Rather, Yuca's, a perennial local favorite, took home the top taco. I don't know why food and drink needs to be a contest -- but Angelenos seem intent on giving out awards. And there are yet more to be doled out.

Howdy, Hello, Hiya: My Name Is Tricia Romano

imageBefore you start reading my blog entries and wondering who that crazy lady wandering around L.A. at all hours of the night is, allow me to introduce myself. My name is Tricia Romano, and I've previously terrorized the shores of the East Coast where I wrote a column about nightlife called "Fly Life" for the Village Voice in New York. That five-year run ended in 2007; I packed up and moved to Los Angeles last spring and was living a quiet life by the beach, when BlackBook lulled me out of retirement. I'll be reviewing the latest in Los Angeles nightlife, dishing news and gossip about the city's parties, bars, clubs, restaurants, and even the occasional taco truck.

Los Angeles: Kogi BBQ Truck Grows Up and Procreates

Los Angeles: Kogi BBQ Truck Grows Up and Procreates Finally, high- and lowbrow foodie culture have meshed into one singular explosion of trendiness. The fancy folk are gleefully returning to food carts and regular Angelenos are happily chowing down on self-proclaimed fusion cuisine at the flavor of the moment: Kogi BBQ. See, Kogi is a Korean taco truck. It smooshes together two of LA’s best culinary traditions to create one awesome package: bulgogi in a corn tortilla! For a short while it was underground, moving around the city with only a Twitter feed to alert the most obsessed early adopters. But (and this may come as a shock to out-of-towners), LA is a food city, and this couldn’t stay hidden for long.
