Major Lazer, Guns Don’t Kill People… Lazers Do

What do you get when you pair a Philly-based DJ with a penchant for dinosaurs and a British producer whose pseudonym was once changed from Solid Groove to Switch?

A Strange Video Courtesy of Major Lazer

A Strange Video Courtesy of Major Lazer So this is weird. A few weeks ago we published an interview with the mysterious Major Lazer, a Jamaican zombie slayer who may or may not be the creation of DJs Diplo and Switch. The interview was cryptic, and written in Lazer's broken patois, making it hard to decipher. We thought that was the end of it. But today, I got a surprise e-mail from someone claiming to represent Lazer. It led me to a video recreation of my interview with Lazer, which was initially done via e-mail. Check it out after the jump. How they got that picture of me, I'll never know.

Music: Amazing Baby, White Rabbits, Major Lazer

Music: Amazing Baby, White Rabbits, Major Lazer Amazing Baby Rewild (Shangri-La) - Maybe it’s because their songs owe a great debt to the Stone Roses and Frank Zappa, or perhaps it’s because all five of them have long, messy hair, but Amazing Baby, the Brooklyn-based heirs apparent to MGMT, have been pigeonholed as “drugged-out nudist hippies” -- even before the release of their debut album. Rewild is, however, a major acid trip down psych-pop lane, flitting between synthesizers and traditional instruments, a playfully (and deliberately) regressive bathtub brew of escapist melodies. On tracks like “Bayonets” and “Kankra,” one gets the sense that these babies are moving one step forward, and two steps back -- in the best way possible. -- Bryan Levandowski

Major Lazer on Killing Dancefloors & Zombies

Major Lazer on Killing Dancefloors & Zombies A collaboration as epic as super-producers Diplo and Switch needs an equally epic hook, so meet Major Lazer, the ambassador created by the two beat scientists to represent their twisted ode to Jamaican dancehall. Lazer is an avatar of sorts -- a Jamaican commando with laser guns for arms who rides a rocket-powered skateboard, and battles vampires and zombies in his free time. He’s the ideal personification of the schizophrenic sound these two have perfected on the upcoming album Guns Don’t Kill People…Lazers Do, out June 16. We had the chance to talk to the reclusive commando about his new career as a musician and his partnership with Diplo and Switch. Don’t ask us how we got in touch him. We just wrote down some questions, sent them off, and this is what came back. Good luck.
