Farmer Dave Scher: Still Tripping

Farmer Dave Scher: Still Tripping When I found out the California dreamer Farmer Dave Scher was about to come out with a new album, I couldn't help smiling. Best known from previous bands Beachwoods Sparks and All Night Radio, Dave is now releasing Flash Forward to the Good Times on Kemado Records come August 18. I’ve always been a big fan of his psychedelic trips of music with All Night Radio -- first encounter was way back in 2003 at the Bowery Ballroom for Sub Pop’s music showcase. When I chatted with Dave, I thought he’d been beamed from 1969 due to his verbiage, aesthetic, and of course his tunes. (Quite an impression this musician made on my ears.)

Black Kids’ Reggie Youngblood Takes Our Pop Quiz

Black Kids’ Reggie Youngblood Takes Our Pop Quiz Before even having a record out, Florida quintet the Black Kids were catapulted in to the spotlight by a music press captivated by their live performances and their Cure-meets-frat-boy-and-sunshine sound. When they finally did release their full-length album Partie Traumatic, it debuted at #5 on the UK charts and ended the year topping best-of lists. The question, then, is where do the kids go from there? Well, they’re currently running a contest for you to have them play at your house party (where they’ll probably not teach your boyfriend how to dance with you), and they’re releasing a vinyl limited-edition of their EP Wizard of Ahhhs on April 18 in honor of Record Store Day. Oh, and they’re on tour Mates of State, hitting the Music Hall of Williamsburg this Sunday and Webster Hall on Monday. But first, lead singer Reggie Youngblood tells us about sleeping in his Snuggie, his love for the year 1988, and guilty feelings about sex in our decidedly childlike Pop Quiz.

Greg Mottola’s Ticket to ‘Adventureland’

Greg Mottola’s Ticket to ‘Adventureland’ Superbad director Greg Mottola is poised to pop the bromance bubble with Adventureland, a movie he wrote and directed based on his experiences as an underpaid carny one college summer. Starring Jesse Eisenberg as James Brennan, Mottola's fictionalized alter ego, and Twilight's Kristen Stewart as Em, his troubled love interest, Adventureland is a sweeter, slightly more serious, and definitely more stoned version of Superbad. After the jump, Mottola talks with us about who might be the awkward king of America, Twilight madness, getting mistaken for Moby, and his upcoming stab at sci-fi with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost.

Kim, From Matt and Kim, Takes Our Pop Quiz

Kim, From Matt and Kim, Takes Our Pop Quiz A minimalist set-up of drums and keyboard, the Brooklyn-based couple of Matt and Kim (Matt Johnson and Kim Schifino) make infectious tunes that inspires foot-tapping and sometimes food-throwing. Today their long-awaited sophomore album Grand comes out, and Thursday a record-release party at the Music Hall of Williamsburg kicks off their tour. They'll later hook up with Cut Copy for some shows, and maybe play some exclusive sets in closets, taxicabs and dumpsters. But before all that, Kim took some time to answer our burning Pop Quiz questions.

The Mountain Goats vs. Super Mario

imageSo as while most of you wacky kids were sucking down the celebratory goblets of wine on Saturday night, my diminutive friend and I schlepped over to the Music Hall of Williamsburg to investigate the coalescence of The Mountain Goats and Kaki King. The Pitchfork darlings were stunning -- and there would be little doubt otherwise. But the highest point of the night boiled down to a single song.
