Supermodels Boycott “Muse” Gala

imageLast night’s Vogue-sponsored Costume Gala at the Met Museum wasn’t without its fair share of controversy. And, no, I’m not talking about Madonna’s thigh-high boots and bunny ears, nor am I referring to Helena Christensen’s frock fit for figure skating, which was outfitted with crystals spelling out the aforementioned magazine’s moniker. In fact the tempest in question instead had to do with the supermodels that didn’t show up at all last night -- the result of Anna Wintour snubbing a particularly revered (not to mention Michelle Obama-approved) Parisian designer.

Invasion of the Supermodels

Invasion of the Supermodels This spring marks the invasion of the supermodel. Just as “new nostalgia” is affecting fashion trends from the red carpet to clothing racks at Topshop (not to mention TV dinner trays at Target), the recession has likewise sparked a resurgence of interest in the seasoned supe. Take one look at high-fashion advertising campaigns for SS09 and the trend is clear: “Naomi Campbell and Linda Evangelista for Dsquared2, Gisele Bundchen and Kate Moss for Versace, Stephanie Seymour for Valentino, Claudia Schiffer for Yves Saint Laurent, and now, Amber Valletta in a stunning campaign for Loewe,” says Fashionologie. And fashion rags are following suit.

Art Basel: Calmer, Quieter, Didn’t Suck

Art Basel: Calmer, Quieter, Didn’t Suck Word on the street, beach, the fairs and in hotel lobby banter was that Basel 2K8, as a whole, couldn’t hold a candle to last year’s event. Even so, hordes of New Yorkers made the airborne trek on Friday for the weekend wrap-up. As if Basel-goers needed to clock in more time at the Raleigh hotel, the venue hosted the Tommy Hilfiger & Vanity Fair gala to benefit Free Arts NYC. Regrettably, the soiree can be classified a poor man’s version of the Visionaire event of the previous night (no male models, no champagne fountain).

Art Basel: Naomi Campbell in Fashion

Art Basel: Naomi Campbell in Fashion Last night’s Art Photo Expo homage to supermodel Naomi Campbell was by far the ticket. Ms. Campbell graced the event with her presence, as did her bodyguards, publicists, agents, make-up artists, hair people, plus boyfriend and his peeps. The admiring audience -- plus Mayor Manny Diaz -- stopped at nothing (a mini stampede followed) to get a glimpse of the fashion icon. The retrospective captured her illustrious career, which besides slapping an assistant or two, included being part of the Trinity (Naomi, Christie, and Linda) and appearing on more than 500 magazine covers. Sometimes, she was the first black model to appear on those particular covers. In addition to Naomi, Art Photo featured work by big-name photographers Freger, Algor, and Chin to name a few, reinforcing photography’s righteous place on the art fair landscape.

Babywoman Naomi Campbell Hits Bollywood

imageThe high-fashion industry is no stranger to model crossover. From Carla Bruni and Agyness Deyn to fledgling actress Gemma Ward, high-profile models have long been extending their professional wings to include of music and acting. And the same is true of Naomi Campbell, though the supermodel’s singing career hasn’t exactly made waves -- ever heard of her 1995 album, babywoman? Neither had I. But now it seems Campbell is hopping back aboard the music bandwagon, and this time, heading straight for Bollywood.

Naomi Campbell Retrospective to Hit Art Basel

Naomi Campbell Retrospective to Hit Art Basel Kate Moss isn’t the only supermodel enjoying the homage of a major art exhibition. Gaultier in Paris: “Chic Pocahontas”

Gaultier in Paris: “Chic Pocahontas” It's sorta funny when cultures clash like, say, a Japanese cowboy (thanks Ween!). That's why I wasn't sure whether Sunday's Hermes show in Paris, loaded with a Western-wear theme, was another Bruno stunt. Turns out it was just designer Jean-Paul Gaultier, who rarely disappoints. "Jean-Paul loves women and dresses us in a feminine and very sensual way," Stephanie Seymour told Reuters. "I thought it was like a chic Pocahontas."

Naomi Campbell Shoots ‘Em Up

Naomi Campbell Shoots ‘Em Up SHOWstudio just debuted fashion photographer (and co-creator of SHOWstudio) Nick Knight's latest fashion political film. His first political film dealt with body image and feminism using The Gossip's singer Beth Ditto. His second venture in the fashion political realm deals with the hot fashion topic of today, black models. The video shows Naomi Campbell holding two automatic weapons while staring into the camera. Inter-cut into this is Nick Knight's feelings about racism in fashion:

"I am virtually never allowed to photograph black models for the magazines, fashion houses, cosmetic brands, perfume companies, and advertising clients I work for. Whenever I ask to use a black model I am given excuses such as 'Black models are not aspirational in some markets' or 'they do not reflect the brands values,' normally, however, no reason is given."

Then Campbell unleashes a firestorm of fury using her automatic weapons, while in Louboutin and a Rodarte dress. See the video here .
