Gaultier in Paris: “Chic Pocahontas”

By

John Clarke Jr.

Gaultier in Paris: “Chic Pocahontas” It's sorta funny when cultures clash like, say, a Japanese cowboy (thanks Ween!). That's why I wasn't sure whether Sunday's Hermes show in Paris, loaded with a Western-wear theme, was another Bruno stunt. Turns out it was just designer Jean-Paul Gaultier, who rarely disappoints. "Jean-Paul loves women and dresses us in a feminine and very sensual way," Stephanie Seymour told Reuters. "I thought it was like a chic Pocahontas."

Naomi Campbell Shoots ‘Em Up

By

Lauren Garroni

Naomi Campbell Shoots ‘Em Up SHOWstudio just debuted fashion photographer (and co-creator of SHOWstudio) Nick Knight's latest fashion political film. His first political film dealt with body image and feminism using The Gossip's singer Beth Ditto. His second venture in the fashion political realm deals with the hot fashion topic of today, black models. The video shows Naomi Campbell holding two automatic weapons while staring into the camera. Inter-cut into this is Nick Knight's feelings about racism in fashion:

"I am virtually never allowed to photograph black models for the magazines, fashion houses, cosmetic brands, perfume companies, and advertising clients I work for. Whenever I ask to use a black model I am given excuses such as 'Black models are not aspirational in some markets' or 'they do not reflect the brands values,' normally, however, no reason is given."

Then Campbell unleashes a firestorm of fury using her automatic weapons, while in Louboutin and a Rodarte dress. See the video here .

Naomi Campbell Will Not Make You a Supermodel

By

Lauren Garroni

imageWhat makes a supermodel? According to Naomi Campbell, "Models need to earn their stripes -- I just think the term [supermodels] is used a little too loosely." Campbell, who's lucky enough to have arguably earned the title, goes on to say that "Kate Moss is obviously a supermodel but after Gisele, I don't think there's been one." The original crop of supermodels includes Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, Claudia Schiffer, and of course, Campbell, who dismisses the new crop of popular models like Agyness Deyn and Hilary Rhoda as unworthy of the supermodel tiara. Easy for her to say, all perched high on her glass stilettos and hurling objects at servants.

Remembering Yves Saint Laurent

By

Katie J. Parker

While Yves Saint Laurent may be gone, his legacy and memory remains. To many people, Saint Laurent was more than a designer. The fashion revolutionary, who died Sunday of a brain tumor, was responsible for creating iconic designs for over 48 years. In his own words, Saint Laurent aimed “to make women beautiful, but to reassure them, to give them confidence, to allow them to come to terms with themselves." And he did just that. Saint Laurent not only crossed traditional female fashion constraints by creating androgynous designs for women in the modern world, but he also traversed social and racial boundaries within the industry. In a tearful interview with Britain’s Channel 4 News, Naomi Campbell attributed Saint Laurent with propelling black models onto the runway. "My first Vogue cover ever was because of this man," Campbell said.
