Nightswimming: Deborah Harry, Marc Jacobs, and More on Stephen Sprouse

Nightswimming: Deborah Harry, Marc Jacobs, and More on Stephen Sprouse A quick scan of the room: Anna Sui, Patricia Field, Gabi from threeASFOUR, Kembra Pfahler, Inez and Vinoodh, Agyness Deyn (radiant in her day-glo sequined Sprouse jacket), and Marc Jacobs all in black with a splash of color from his Sprouse Vuitton leggings. The scene was fittingly neon-hot as the downtown all-stars came out in full force for the opening party for the Stephen Sprouse exhibit at Deitch Projects last night. The show, a mix of his eternally cool punk fashions, towering neon rock ’n’ roll paintings, and a spectacular tableaux of Polaroids, could have held our attention all night.

Nightswimming: Brief Encounters with Famous Men (& Women)

imageI love a good brief encounter. Just the other night, I ran into downtown sensation Justin Bond on First Avenue. He looked radiant, and raring to go for a night out. I was on my way to see The Wrestler. (He hadn’t seen it, but his cute friends said they liked the trailer.) “Well, I’m going to see people,” Justin said in his uncanny delivery, and he and his two pals were off to the Metropolitan Bar. Not a minute later, while en route to Sunshine Cinemas, I stopped into my local coffee shop for a surprisingly delicious vegan red velvet cupcake, and in walks BlackBook’s Icons issue cover star Matt Dillon. I was happy to hear that our story elicited such “great feedback -- I got so many emails and calls about it.” He had seen The Wrestler and gave it serious praise.

Nightswimming: BlackBook Does Hollywood!

imageThe BlackBook edit staff decamped to the West Coast this week for our upcoming special Hollywood issue, embarking on a non-stop star-packed marathon of splashy (literally!) fashion shoots and do-tell-all interviews. We danced with Paparazzi (the 23-year-old next superstar deejay, that is) and tried not to gawk or stalk the many other awesome stars who crossed our paths. Hardest of all to resist: Morrissey, whose new album, due out early next year, we anxiously await. Several Morrissey sightings have left a resounding echo in our heads: the orchestral strains of "Everyday Is Like Sunday." Silent and grey, however, not so much.

Nightswimming: Patti Smith’s Dream

Nightswimming: Patti Smith’s Dream “Patti Smith is such a goddess. I could never talk to her,” Parker Posey confided at a small cocktail reception for the legendary rock ’n’ roll poet last week in the outdoor sculpture garden at the Museum of Modern Art. At said moment, Smith came lunging in for Posey, lavishing praise on the indie queen for her hilarious roles in Christopher Guest movies. It couldn’t have been a better-scripted scene if Guest wrote it himself. Luckily, Posey overcame her goddess-shyness and lit right up in Smith’s presence. The occasion was a screening of Patti Smith: Dream of Life, a poignant biopic from fashion photographer Stephen Sebring that hit theaters this week, after eleven years of filming.
