Good Night Mr. Lewis: Earth to CB4, Noah Tepperberg Is Your Friend

By

Good Night Mr. Lewis: Earth to CB4, Noah Tepperberg Is Your Friend New York nightlife blogs are abuzz with revelations that Noah Tepperberg is trying to turn Tenth Avenue eyesore Earth into a high-end restaurant-lounge. This is good news for those seeking a fashionable bite to eat far from the maddening crowds. It’s also great news for residents of Community Board 4, who will benefit from the loss off a promoter-driven, low-level club -- which Earth became from day one -- and the introduction of a savvy operator like Noah. This small, exclusive restaurant and lounge will anchor 1Oak, as well as the still amazingly beautiful Park, without Earth attracting the B, C, and D-listers. There will be no place for crowds to linger and annoy the neighbors; they will seek like-minded individuals in other neighborhoods, with no imminent return of Red Rock West or Roxy in sight. With a strong food element as well as a strong operator, CB4 members will get what they want, as the three remaining spaces will be run by three of the strongest hospitality operators out there: after Noah, it's Eric Goode, Scott Sartiano, and Richie Akiva. This 1-2-3 punch of operators will dominate the area and clean up the block. In fact, let's take an exclusive look at Noah's proposed menu for the new joint.

Good Night Mr. Lewis: Shane Neman, JoonBug Alumnus Emeritus

By

Steve Lewis

imageI started writing my humble blog over at JoonBug working with my friends Shane Neman and Ariana Gordon. I intended to write a paragraph or two a couple times a week, and well, it didn’t work out that way. A couple months ago, JoonBug was sold to another friend, Jon Gabel. I moved my blog over here to BlackBook with the intent of reaching a new and larger audience. The nightclub industry is not just owners, staff, and promoters -- there are so many things going on behind the scenes, so many people feeding at the trough. One of the things companies like JoonBug and Jon Gabel do is rent out virtually every club in New York for New Year's Eve and use the hundreds of thousands of names on their email lists to sell tickets. This works, as the clubs are very happy farming this action out so they can concentrate on Christmas business.

Industry Insiders: DJ Jus Ske, Master of Western Decks Mr. West co-owner and DJ Jus Ske talks about blowing up, speeding up, and building up.

Favorite Hangs: When I'm in Tokyo, I love Feria. It's a very high-energy, New York-style club abroad. David Guetta's "F*** Me, I'm Famous" parties are always insane, and I love those. When I'm in NYC, you can usually find me at Mr. West, 1Oak, Beatrice Inn, or Rose Bar.

Good Night Mr. Lewis: All the Week’s Parties

By

Steve Lewis

imageI was asked by my editor to compile a list of the best joints on any given night -- i.e. Mondays at Butter or Tuesdays at Rose Bar. As I travel in and enjoy many scenes, I answered the question as where you might find me on any given night. As has been pointed out constantly in the comments section, I am a flaming schizophrenic, so what I feel like doing one night might not apply a week later. That said, here are my choices, with explanations and alternatives for the left side of my brain.

Industry Insiders: Jeffrey Jah, Inn-Famous Jeffrey Jah holds forth on going from runways to club king, bringing heat from here to Sao Paulo, and putting DEA raids behind him.

Point of Origin: I'm originally from Toronto, but now I live in Gramercy Park. After my modeling days, I was an event producer and creative director for venues. I started out having connections in the fashion industry, from photographers to make-up artists, editors, and designers. I started producing events, which eventually turned into parties, promoting clubs, directing clubs, and finally owning clubs, bars, and restaurants. I currently own the Inn/Canoe Club in New York, I'm a partner in 1Oak, a partner in Café de La Musique in Florianopolis, Brazil. I also have six Lotus clubs in Brazil, Double Seven reopening in New York, and a Double Seven opening in LA in 2009.

Industry Insiders: Seth Greenberg, Mogul Multitasker

Industry Insiders: Seth Greenberg, Mogul Multitasker Capitale’s Seth Greenberg on the origins of bottle service, taking over Boston, why Parisians bite New York style, and who really invented bottle service.

Point of Origin: The Paradise Club and Stitches [were my first properties, both in Boston]. Both needed pre-function, so we moved Stitches to an independent location. Then we expanded Paradise by opening M-80 in the old Stitches site. So we moved Stitches to a new location, about a mile away, so now Stitches had a big space. A comedy club in the back, and a little restaurant bar/lounge up front. And now M-80 was connected to the Paradise Club. After about a year, we expanded, then eventually gutted the entire facility so M-80 had both buildings. Then we expanded M-80 to New York, opened Conscience Point in Southampton, and created M-80 in the summer.

Industry Insiders: Aalex Julian of Tenjune Tenjune door sentry Aalex Julian dishes on the K-Mart of nightlife, the old chicks and thugs who don’t make the cut, “animals” who grab asses, and why some nightlife vets are toast.

Point of Origin: I've been working the door at clubs in Manhattan for almost six years. I started doing a lot of special events, for Lizzie Grubman, other PR groups. I did the Jay-Z event in the Hamptons. I knew people like Jeffrey Jah from going out. Some people resent me because I befriended the right people.

Industry Insiders: Remi Laba of Bagatelle & Kiss and Fly

Industry Insiders: Remi Laba of Bagatelle & Kiss and Fly Monsieur Meatpacking: Bagatelle and Kiss and Fly's Remi Laba on boring models, the grub at Pastis, and bringing down the house (music).

Point of Origin: My dad’s American, my mother’s French. I was born in the US and raised in France. I can’t seem to negate my origin for some reason. Nightlife was an accident, to be honest. I was working for a liquor company, Pernod Ricard, and people were constantly asking me for sponsorship, and at one point I said ‘You know what? I’ll comp your sponsoring if my friends can come to your events.’ It grew from there until club owners starting saying they would pay me to bring people to their club. And that’s how we [partner Aymeric Clemente, formerly of La Goulue and Le Bilboquet] started, ten years ago.

Major Wood at 1Oak

1Oak adds a dose of swank and civility to the New York lounge scene.

By

Ken Scrudato

Major Wood at 1Oak 1Oak -- we won’t make you guess -- stands for “one of a kind.” The owners of the new exclusive Manhattan nightspot sensed change in the air. Jeffrey Jah, Scott Sartiano, Richie Akiva and Ronnie Madra have set out to add a little refinement to the New York lounge scene. Akiva, who conceived 1Oak’s tastefully burnished space, explains, “I wanted to create what I felt had been missing in New York,” insisting the city needed “more warm, classy high-end lounges.”
