June 2008: A Month of Iconic Loss George Carlin, stand-up comedy icon, died of heart failure in Los Angeles last night, furthering an odd phenomenon I’ve been noticing in June of 2008—the death of icons. The month began with fashion divinity Yves Saint Laurent dying of brain cancer on June 1st. The next day, Bo Diddley, a key figure in the American blues and rock n’ roll movements, died of heart failure. The fashion and music worlds are suddenly left without two of their greats.

RIP Stan Winston

RIP Stan Winston Reports about the death of make-up and special effect guru Stan Winston are trickling online, first at AintItCoolNews and now at IMDb. Strangely, none of the major news sites have picked it up, but those two sites are certain the movie legend passed away on Sunday night. Winston, who gained international fame after working on James Cameron’s The Terminator, and won his first Oscar on Cameron’s Aliens. Winston went on to win Oscars for his work on Terminator 2 and Jurassic Park. Winston was also known for his work on Edward Scissorhands and the Predator movies. His last completed project was this summer’s smash Iron Man. The cause of death is unknown.
