The Resilience of Lauren Hutton

By

Lauren Garroni

The Resilience of Lauren Hutton While actresses seem to dominate the covers of your favorite fashion magazines, old school models seem to be having a renaissance. I reported several weeks ago that Vanity Fair's September issue is the only fashion mag putting models on their cover, 90's supermodels, in fact. Now comes word that veteran model Lauren Hutton will be the face of high street Spanish company Mango's fall campaign. The ageless gap-toothed beauty was photographed in pieces that reflect her androgynous streamlined style--a chunky knit mini-dress and pinstripe shirts. The company even created a line of silk chemises called the "We love you, Lauren." Mrs. Hutton, you are everlasting.

‘Vanity Fair’ Best-Dressed List Celebrates Mature Couture What is the main difference between the gentlemen in this photo? According to Vanity Fair, one is best-dressed, and one is not. VF has published their annual International Best-Dressed List, and of the 42 honorees, 27 are 40 years old and up. Take that, Young Hollywood.

Fashion Mags De-Model Fall Covers

By

Lauren Garroni

imageEvery good fashion lover knows the September issue of every fashion magazine is the biggest and the best; we wait with breath that is baited. However, there seems to be only one magazine this September featuring actual models on its cover. Neither Vogue nor Elle; the former's cover girl is Kiera Knightly, and the latter chose to go with "musician" and sometime "actress" Jessica Simpson. The September model mag honor goes to Vanity Fair of all places, which will feature all the marquee-name 1990s models. Confirmed for the VF cover are Stephanie Seymour, Naomi Campbell, Claudia Schiffer, Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, and Cindy Crawford. Are models such an endangered species that only an ensemble cover had any chance of getting play for fall?

What’s a Blogopticon?

By

Ben Barna

What’s a Blogopticon? When we first heard that Vanity Fair created a Blogopticon, we though they had crafted a blog that transforms into a massive intergalactic robot. That would have been impressive. Even more impressive though, is what the Blogopticon really is—a map of some of the web world’s most notable blogs, handily divided into four quadrants based on whether they’re newsy, opiniony, scurrilous, or earnest. We’d like to think our blog is absent from the grid because we’re more of an online journal, a web diary if you will. And we’re glad VF agrees.

The History of the Internet

By

Ben Barna

The History of the Internet Henry Ford invented the automobile. Thomas Edison invented the light bulb. God invented fingernails. Santa Claus invented the PS2. But who on earth invented the Internet, the modern world’s most ubiquitous and influential tool? Who is responsible for you reading these very words (other than us, and you)? The answer is no one in particular, since something so vast and, well, invisible couldn’t have possibly been created by one brain. To celebrate the 15th anniversary of Mosaic, the first widely-used web browser, Vanity Fair has compiled an oral history of the creation of our new best friend, featuring recollections by some of the people who were instrumental in it.

Bonfire of the Vanities Over Unread Article

By

Nick Haramis

Bonfire of the Vanities Over Unread Article Vanity Fair's National Editor Todd Purdum recently wrote a piece—a 9,647-word piece—about Bill Clinton. And, needless to say, it hasn't gone over well in various circles. Speaking to a reporter from the Huffington Post after campaigning in San Diego, Clinton said of Purdum, “He’s a really dishonest reporter… And I haven’t read [the article]. But he told me there’s five or six just blatant lies in there. But he’s a real slimy guy.” Clinton would go on to call him "sleazy" and a "scumbag."
