High Fashion for No Income

By

Rohin Guha

imageYeah, yeah, so you're also incensed by Vogue India editrix Priya Tanna's decision to showcase wares from Fendi and Alexander McQueen on models who starve not because they force themselves to, but because they can't afford food. So's everyone. At least Tanna's unintentional attempt to turn the clock back half a century on India's international profile with her 16-page spread in the August issue was undermined to some degree by photographer Jean François Campos. Campos, whose previous publication credits include Flair Italy, has a proven track record shooting high fashion in low-income areas. While he's unable to salvage the asinine spread's integrity, he makes the colors pop and tries his damnedest to capture the joy and cheer of these "average citizens" -- barely succeeding in his quest to stifle the dramatic irony.

September Fashion Mags Get Thin

By

Lauren Garroni

imageLooks like a bleak September is upon us for fashion magazines, and it's not just for lack of models. The month is regarded as the most important issue of the year for many, and likewise is the largest issue in size. Last year, Vogue produced a September issue that was 840 pages, 725 of which were advertisements. However, for the first time in nearly a decade, this year's September issue will not best its predecessor; instead, it will carry 50 fewer pages. This speaks to a general decline in ad pages for the fashion industry. For the first two quarters of this year, ad pages were down over 14% at the majors like Harper's Bazaar, Vogue, InStyle, Lucky, etc. For reference, BlackBook's September issue is currently mapped at 1,216 triple-sided gatefold pages, including 17,024 advertising pages (you read that right) with 14 complimentary CDs, 79 scent packets, and a personal home visit to every subscriber by a desperate BlackBook intern. They do chores!

Sean Avery Takes His Best Shot

This summer Sean Avery went from shooting pucks to shooting models. Or at least getting coffee for the people that do. Now that he's Mensvogue.com's guest editor, we look at how The Most Hated Man in Hockey is doing at his new job.

Sean Avery Takes His Best Shot Sean Avery seems adamant on convincing the world that his much-discussed, oft-maligned internship at Vogue magazine is more than just a lark—a desperate ploy for attention by a man infamous for seeking it—or just a flat-out attempt to meet girls (because sexy, rich hockey players have had so much trouble in the past, right?).
