‘Whatever Works’ for Larry David: Not Much, Thanks

‘Whatever Works’ for Larry David: Not Much, Thanks Whatever Works reunites director-writer Woody Allen with Larry David. The legendary funnymen had previously worked together on Radio Days and New York Stories. Most actors would be ecstatic to be offered the lead in a Woody Allen movie, but David had a much different take. “I thought Woody had become unhinged,” he says. “I wondered who put this crackpot idea in his head. And of course as with anything I’ve ever been offered, I didn’t feel up to the task. Feeling up to the task is not my thing.” David eventually took on the part of Boris Yellnikoff, a man who is so disenchanted with his marriage, luxurious lifestyle, and the human race that he tries to commit suicide. Saved by a canopy outside his uptown Manhattan apartment, Boris gets divorced, moves downtown, and meets a much younger woman, Melodie (Evan Rachel Wood). The two ultimately learn a tremendous amount about love and life from one another.

Did you have to dig deep to play the role of a middle-aged Jewish man?
That aspect was really unusual. I tried to find as many Jews as I could and befriend them and talk to them and see what made them tick. I went back to Brooklyn and walked the streets and interviewed people, "What's it like being a Jew? How do you behave?"

Breaking: Woody Allen Is Anti-Murder

Breaking: Woody Allen Is Anti-Murder Woody Allen, Larry David, Patricia Clarkson, and Evan Rachel Wood sat in the ballroom of the Regency today in Manhattan to answer questions about their new movie Whatever Works. The questions were typical press conference fluff until Jefferey Wells of Hollywood Elsewhere stood up and tried to use the misanthropic nature of the film to get the panel to comment on two recent tragic shootings. He was of course referring to the murder of abortion doctor George Tiller and yesterday's frightening attack at the Holocaust Museum in Washington DC. When his preface ended with a question to the effect of, "Can you comment on the murders?" the stars and the rest of the reporters sat there in a kind of stunned silence at the shift in tone. Then Woody Allen showed us just why he's a comedy legend, with a perfectly timed and perfectly delivered answer.

Freida Pinto Is the New Scarlett Johansson

Freida Pinto Is the New Scarlett Johansson Sometime very, very soon (later today?), all this Slumdog Millionaire excitement will finally abate. But let's wring the last few trickles of hype out of the Little Movie That Could, while we can. In light of all that talk of post-Oscar floppery, it looks like Freida Pinto (who may or may not be dating her former co-star) has found a way to beat the bad karma that an Oscar win seems to foretell for all its champs. She's going to follow in Scarlett Johansson's footsteps as Woody Allen's new muse.

Charney Commits Crimes & Misdemeanors

image
One can imagine Woody Allen’s young bride Soon-Yi Previn on the back of Vice magazine, her no-fuss Asian blandness hawking American Apparel knee-highs and a turtlenecks, but not Woody himself. However, AA has erected billboards featuring Allen dressed as a Hassidic Jew from a scene in Annie Hall. But Woody’s always been more of a hepcat than a hipster, so he’s decided to file a $10 million suit in a U.S. District court in Manhattan against Dov Charney and his AA army. Allen claims they never contacted him about using his image and finds them “especially egregious and damaging.” We still don’t get what Woody Allen dressed as a Hassidic Jew has to do with selling skinny jeans, but that’s probably the point.
