What’s Happening to M. Night?

By

Ben Barna

What’s Happening to M. Night? We're really rooting for you Night. The Sixth Sense is undeniable. Unbreakable is one of the most underrated films of this decade (we’re not kidding). Signs was a creepy and moving success. So when The Village proved you weren’t without filmmaking flaws, and then Lady in the Water utterly confirmed it, we began to worry. Your image in the press suffered—an egomaniac they called you—and suddenly our “next Spielberg” began resembling our “next Cimino.” So when chilling trailers for your latest film The Happening started popping up, we expected a return to form. An invisible force causes people to lose their self preservation instinct—suicide all around. Mark Wahlberg and Zooey Deschanel, two of the most likeable actors in Hollywood, on the run for their lives. What’s not to like? Well, today the reviews are in, and with held breath, we checked them out…

Wowie, Zooey!

What’s Happening with Zooey Deschanel? The alternative darling—who rose to fame in Almost Famous—stars in M. Night Shyamalan’s new summer creep-fest and has just made her first record. Visibly shy, frightened of stages, she’s nonetheless hopping on the roller coaster.

Wowie, Zooey! It is a warm early spring day in Los Angeles and the rest of the city is already in flip-flops and too-short Abercrombie minis. The effect is that of a student at the Sorbonne rather than of an actress who is on the verge of her major breakthrough, an image that is only reinforced when she begins to speak.

Zooey. Chloë. Summer 2010.

By

Ben Barna

Zooey. Chloë. Summer 2010. Well maybe not summer, and maybe not 2010, but soon. Zooey Deschanel and Chloë Sevigny have signed on to costar in Divorce Ranch, reports Variety. Set in a post-WWII Nevada, where quickie divorces are granted after residency is established, Sevigny plays an actress who travels to the ranch to meet and marry a wealthy man. Deschanel plays her assistant, in what is (redundantly) being called an “indie” comedy. Now that Scarlett and Natalie’s team-up fell flat, it’s up to Zooey and Chloë (or is it Chloë and Zooey?) to prove that the screen has room for more than one "It Girl." (Ed Note: Hollywood Trend Alert! With Jet Li and Jackie Chan starring in Forbidden Kingdom, and Robert De Niro and Al Pacino joining forces in Righteous Kill, pairing up counterparts seems to be the new "three-quel.")
