Vanessa Hudgens, Zooey Deschanel Vie for Elusive Janis Joplin Role

Vanessa Hudgens, Zooey Deschanel Vie for Elusive Janis Joplin Role It's lovely that today, everyone's stepped back from hideously disfiguring America's childhood to do something that most filmmakers have been doing since the dawn of the silver screen: hideously disfiguring popular icons! Say what you will, but Jenna Maroney as Jackie Jormp-Jomp may be the closest thing to an accurate biopic of the troubled singer's life we'll ever get. But by all means that shouldn't stop other thesps with varying levels of talent from wanting to get off on being iconic for two hours in front of a camera pay their own tributes to Joplin. But let's have a closer look at the top damsels scrapping it out for the role plus a bonus, if obvious, contender.

Zooey Deschanel & the Art of Sanity Maintenance

Zooey Deschanel & the Art of Sanity Maintenance There's definitely something about Zooey. America's most enigmatic sweetheart -- and former BlackBook cover girl -- has done more in her 29 years than most actors will accomplish in their snail-paced career parabola from ingénue to Oscar winner to syndicated TV relic. Each project she tackles carries with it the heft of an anxious creative looking to break from convention. It’s for this reason, presumably, that she’s followed such a wayward career path. Most people will say that Deschanel’s part in Mumford was her breakthrough role, but they are wrong. There’s actually a specific moment, down to the minute, when her star was born. As Cheryl in Miguel Arteta’s The Good Girl, a sardonic department store clerk who wages war on boredom -- and the shop’s ticky-tacky patrons -- Deschanel says, “Attention, shoppers. There's a Retail Rodeo special on aisle 3. Liquid Drain Cleaner, two 12-ounce cans for five dollars. Liquid Drain Cleaner has churning power and it will churn right through your pipes. Ladies, you need female plumbing. Shove something clean and new up your filthy pipes.” Her perfect-circle eyes radiate sweetness and obscenity in equal measure.

Joseph Gordon Levitt & Zooey Deschanel Redo ‘Sid & Nancy’ in Drag

Joseph Gordon Levitt & Zooey Deschanel Redo ‘Sid & Nancy’ in Drag As much as I love Joseph Gordon Levitt (so much!) and Zooey Deschanel (ditto!), I've got reservations about 500 Days of Summer. But then again, I'm secretly counting down the days to this bit of pap from Lars von Trier, so I'm probably not to be trusted. Anyway, so in 500 Days, JGL's and Deschanel's characters liken themselves to iconic punk duo Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen. And thanks to the voodoo of the internet, they've starred in a short film where they actually become the volatile pair. But, behold ... a twist! They dress up in drag, because that's what actors dead serious about their craft do. JGL tackles the role of Nancy while Deschanel dons leather, guyliner, and the wickedest British accent ever in a winsome tribute to Sid. The whole bloody thing is viewable after the jump.

M. Ward Live at the Apollo

M. Ward Live at the Apollo M. Ward is the kind of musician that lives and breathes his work, inspiring those around him to squeeze their best juice out. Case in point: She and Him, Ward's project with Zooey Deschanel, whose first album last year was nostalgic, sweet and highly listenable (much to the chagrin of cynics). He's old-school, shunning digital mediums for working with 4-tracks, and his collaborations read like a laundry-list of the indie community: Cat Power, Beth Orton, Jenny Lewis, and most notably Conor Oberst, who publicly pronounced "M. Ward for President" during a Bright Eyes performance on The Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn in 2004. Ward's 7th album, Hold Time, was released earlier this week and he played the Apollo Theater in Harlem last night with openers the Vivian Girls, bringing hipsters to an area they seldom roam.

Zooey Deschanel’s Apartment Nicer Than Yours

Zooey Deschanel’s Apartment Nicer Than Yours It's exactly like I imagined. Vintage everywhere, acoustic guitars hanging off walls like paintings, nods to classic Hollywood, and a cupfull of pencils for poetry experiments and stream-of-consciousness journal entries. This is BlackBook cover girl Zooey Deschanel's apartment. The Death Cab cutie recently let Domino magazine-affiliated strangers into her home and gave them a tour of her special place. Domino doesn't specify the apartment's location, but I'm guessing New York? Does anyone know, because I'd like to do a pop in.

What’s Happening to M. Night?

What’s Happening to M. Night? We're really rooting for you Night. The Sixth Sense is undeniable. Unbreakable is one of the most underrated films of this decade (we’re not kidding). Signs was a creepy and moving success. So when The Village proved you weren’t without filmmaking flaws, and then Lady in the Water utterly confirmed it, we began to worry. Your image in the press suffered—an egomaniac they called you—and suddenly our “next Spielberg” began resembling our “next Cimino.” So when chilling trailers for your latest film The Happening started popping up, we expected a return to form. An invisible force causes people to lose their self preservation instinct—suicide all around. Mark Wahlberg and Zooey Deschanel, two of the most likeable actors in Hollywood, on the run for their lives. What’s not to like? Well, today the reviews are in, and with held breath, we checked them out…

Wowie, Zooey!

What’s Happening with Zooey Deschanel? The alternative darling—who rose to fame in Almost Famous—stars in M. Night Shyamalan’s new summer creep-fest and has just made her first record. Visibly shy, frightened of stages, she’s nonetheless hopping on the roller coaster.

Wowie, Zooey! It is a warm early spring day in Los Angeles and the rest of the city is already in flip-flops and too-short Abercrombie minis. But 28-year-old Zooey Deschanel arrives for tea dressed in stylish, high-waisted jeans, a pretty white blouse, and a soft, tweedy jacket. She wears pinkish socks with her sandals and no makeup. The effect is that of a student at the Sorbonne rather than of an actress who is on the verge of her major breakthrough, an image that is only reinforced when she begins to speak.
