In-Flight iPods Take Flight

In-Flight iPods Take Flight What's next for airline in-flight entertainment? iPod hook ups! With the entry of in-flight WiFi, airlines seem to finally be "getting" it in terms of technology, and have decided to upgrade from the terrible days of having to watch the one in-flight film showing on the tiny screens that flip down from the ceilings. Virgin America and JetBlue have long been ahead of the curve, providing live televised programming in the back of every seat, and in Virgin's case, outlets at every seat. Now, though, the innovators over at Rockwell Collins have created a system that would allow passengers to hook up their iPods (and other personal media devices) to an individual seat's entertainment system.

New Prince Opus iPod Will Set You Back A Meager $2,100

imageSurely for that chump change, the gadget includes not only every out-take, every "When Doves Cry" reswizzle, and a scrap of fabric torn from the Prince's own pair of assless trousers, but also a custom prayer inscribed on the back. Wrong! Retailing at roughly $150 per song, the iPod includes 15 songs and a 40-minute concert video. It's also very purple and has that unpronounceable other moniker of his inscribed on the back. But that's not all.

Dress Your iPod in Felt & Leather

Dress Your iPod in Felt & Leather I must blatantly lift this from our friends at Kempt simply because they have a spot-on eye for cool things like this iPhone cozy. Is that what they call it, a cozy? Anyway, my iPhone is so scraped, dinged, and cracked that I wish I had kept it snuggled in something like this. Besides, what says autumn more than gray felt and brown leather? Hard Graft has a great line of covers that keep everything -- including your MacBook, iPhone, car keys, and cash -- safe, sound, and looking cool. I'm especially digging their wallet. I'd love one of those. That is, if I had something to put in it these days.

Tata Motors Should Think Different

Tata Motors Should Think Different If Indian car manufacturer Tata Motors designs a super-small car on the cheap and calls it the Nano, can Apple sue? We'll find out soon enough. According to the website, the car's name denotes "high technology and small size," the same reasons we're guessing Team Jobs christened their pint-sized iPod the exact same thing, several years before. The Tata Nano is dubbed "The People's Car," probably because it'll sell for $2,500 a pop, making it the cheapest car (relatively speaking) ever sold. Since "Mini" is already taken, and since the word "Nano" already denotes a tiny iPod, perhaps Tata should've gone with "Micro," or better yet, the "Zune."

Ain’t No Ting (Tings)

Ain’t No Ting (Tings) We’re not going to lie. We didn’t uncover the Ting Tings on a chance blog encounter, or in a grimy U.K. club. It’s quite the opposite, actually. Our first time hearing them was on an iPod commercial—after we read an article on Yahoo! But that doesn’t make their songs any less catchy or us any less hip. The band’s U.K. singles include "Great DJ" and "That’s Not My Name," but leave it up to the coolhunters at Apple to choose one of their lesser known tracks, "Shut Up And Let Me Go" to be the song that gets you to buy an iPod, or make you feel pretty great that you already own one.

This Week’s Obsession: Nike + iPod

image

This week's obsession is, hands down (or should I say, feet down?), the Nike+ iPod running partner. No, it's not tall, dark, and handsome. And it won't massage your barking dogs post-run, but it will provide you with unconditional support, up-to-date statistics, and a constant flow of motivational music. Simply stick the chip in your Nike+ running sneakers, pop on the iPod, and hit the road. The Nike+ gives you goals based on time, distance, and calories. And, as you run, it gives you periodic progress reports. My favorite part is what's known as the "power song," a track you choose prior to your workout that gives you that extra burst of motivation the last mile usually requires.
